Tonight's the night where many of the the most developed parts of the western world in Europe and North America pay their annual homage to the ultimate bureaucratic deceit - the idea that fiddling around with the clocks can create more day light.

Why do we keep doing this?

If Scotland had voted 'yes' a few weeks back then this could have been our last daylight savings, it is only for their benefit tbh.

I'm sure the rest of Europe don't give a toss about Scotland and they move the clocks too.

I don't understand it, and the talk about the farmers needing it makes no sense to me either. Do the cows on the dairy farm look at their watches to decide when they need to be milked?

It was / is done for Scotland.

Without it, some parts of Scotland in Winter would be dark until 10am.

We tried leaving the clocks on BST through the winter as an experiment which lasted a few years from late 1960's-71.The result being that the mornings weren't much better than that in the south east either.GMT is best during the winter because it evenly shares the amount of darkness between evenings and mornings during the dark winter months at our latitude.

I don't understand where people get the idea that it is for Scottish farmers. Do they think the cows get up with an alarm clock?

Don't get caught by the 'harmonising with Europe' idea either. The rest of Europe do 'daylight saving' too. Being on CET would make for very odd sunrise/sunset hours for us in the 'west'.

Personally, I think we should stay on GMT (or 'Universal Time') all year.

I'd prefer we stayed at BST. The winter hours are stuffed either way, at least we could make summer months worth the hours we're given.

Err. Given it's BST in the summer we already make the most of those...

But I'd happily stay BST year round to have slightly lighter evenings. The effect would be darker mornings. Depending upon where you were this would mean schoolkids travelling to school in the dark in the mornings. There again they'd get a little more light-time in the evenings for some outdoor exercise.

Swings and roundabouts.

I loathe the dark months. The upside is the magnificent three months in the summer with days from 4:00am to past ten o'clock...

Yes, I was rebutting the idea we should move to GST all year round.
I'm aware we currently make the most of those. smile

Try 6.15am now being 5.15am, even too early for CBeebies.

Can't wait to hear all the comments about "having an extra hour in bed", I hope you farmers are happy.

I don't mind it too much I guess. At least the phones and computers and heating all automatically change so I don't have to go around the house changing the clocks!
