External mic for Canon 700D
Discussion
I've got a Zoom H1 recorder. Easy to use, battery (single AA) lasts forever, it records to MicroSD or get a short 3.5mm-3.5mm cable and plug it into the camera. It's got a tripod thread on the bottom so I use a either a hotshoe adapter to fix it to the camera or monopod as a boom with a long cable.
I did nearly get a Rode instead as people rave about them but the fact I can record sound directly on the device away from the camera has been handy a few times.

Chaps, I've had a Canon 700D for a few months now and love it and have been doing some video with it although the mic isn't quite the best so I need one that can be mounted on top, can someone recommend me a decent mic that won't break the bank balance please.
Any of the Rode Video Mic range. Results will vary according to what it is you are recording, but for a general mic that will pick up most things, Rode mics will do the trick. However do not expect to pick up low level noise. They start from about £60 and go up to a couple of hundred.

I've got one of the ones in the second link above and although I haven't used it extensively I've been impressed with it. I seem to recall it had pretty good reviews at the time of purchase (wouldn't have bought it if this wasn't the case).
Will be using it more when my STM lens arrives. There is too much auto-focussing noise, even using the RODE, with current lenses (and I'm not skilled enough to use manual focus!). In hindsight I should have bought the 70D kit rather than just the body.

please show me this 'cheaper version'
the 2nd link !!!not saying this is hard work, but ffs this is hard work and you are in I.T ......
Thank you chaps I shall purchase one
I have a rode videomic pro. Which is okay.
I've also got a zoom h4n which again is okay. Buying a zoom and plugging it into the camera is not the best idea. The amps on the camera will detract from the audio quality. Better to capture separately and brink together in video editing software - it's very very simple to do.
For most things I'd just stick the rode on. The zoom h4n is a pain, to work well/properly you need to set it up property and you really want to be monitoring the sound and the levels. Fine in a really controlled environment.
Personally, I prefer to use a cheap lap mic and plug it into the zoom if I want to capture just one person.
