So there I was a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday morning doing a brake fluid service on the S. Suddenly remembered that one of my sons was coming over for a Sunday roast so, without thinking, free-wheeled the car down my down-sloping drive to make way for his car. As I approached the low brickwall at the bottom of the drive, applied the brake pedal but with a fluid-less system - no retardation....Panic, hand brake, slammed it into first but still hit the wall at a couple of mph.

The crunch was loud but the damage was relatively minor - a bit of micro crazing which interestingly enough was transmitted to (and confined to) the Chim style bonnet side vents (a late S3C so no bonnet scoop) - and the inevitable destruction of my 2 Sherpas.

The positive outcome is that the bonnet now seems to "sit" better than before and no longer pops open over our local pot-holed lanes so every cloud etc..!!

On the negative side I only have one spare indicator lens - and that is the Kia Pride version. Having fitted it I must admit that it looks neater than the OEM version but my weekend trawl of the internet and breakers to find another unit has been fruitless - the breakers all point out that all the K.P's have long since auto-dismantled** and there is no demand for spare bits. Nil on ebay etc and the local Kia dealer quotes £35 + VAT as a "special order".

OK I could always go E36 but I do like the look of the Kia unit - anyone got one gathering dust or any other clues ??

  • if I'm reading "How Many Left" correctly then of the 22,000 or so Prides that were knocking about in 2001 only 600 or so survive ..

Blimey!

are they definitely quoting the correct part number?

At that rate Kia owners will be fitting TVR/Sherpa indicators soon as a cheaper option smile

ETA... a quick phone call to my local Kia Dealer got me a price of £6.25, not in stock but can get me one in 2 or 3 days!

I feel your pain, have got through 2 pairs in 4 years. 1 set left so know I will be looking again at some point. With 3D printing coming on now hopefully will be able to scan and then print them by the time I need a new pair!

Cant remember when I last saw a Kia Pride in this country! It was one of the last of the poorer quality cars before Kia got their act together. Most will now be no more than a brown stain on the ground in a remote corner of a scrapyard.
On the other hand the BMW E30 (note, E30, not E36!) is still around in some quantities and has become a classic in its own right. E30 lenses are readily available on the aftermarket, for example the following is just one of dozens on offer on ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-E30-ZKW-TURN-SIGNAL-...

At that sort of price for a PAIR I do not cry too much if one of mine gets damaged. Not quite disposable, but at that price certainly affordable. And in clear, amber or smoked whichever suits your colour scheme. To me it is a 'no-brainer'.

I bet Phillpot collared all the Kia lenses, just in case he runs out of Sherpa ones to fund his retirement!

confused I thought the 3d went out of circulation round about 1971 when decimalisation came in?
You could get a packet of Spangles for 3d back then. smile ( or were they 6d ? )

Now then, if you had a £50 printer, that would be worthwhile...........

scratchchin Actually, thinking about it Chris, if you can print Sherpa indicator lenses, you have effectively found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! biggrin

Happy days!

Yep - just off to Canterbury to pick up mine - the quote of £35 + was for the complete indicator unit rather than just the lens - but the Kia guy did confirm that the lenses are getting thin on the ground...so time to stock up...

Glad I stumbled across this thread, had been planning a complicated LED conversion for my indicators - but now just ordered a set of E30 lenses instead.

I have found some amber LED units from Car Builder Solutions that will fit in the space, but will need an aluminium backing plate made up with a hole cut so they can be flush mounted in. Will maybe give it a go next year. Does anybody know if the V8S flasher unit is electronic and will handle LED units as is, or will I need the load resistors to get the correct flash speed? Suspect I will be needing the resistors.

Cheers Chris

????? Did TVR have electronics when they unleashed the V8S?
Did TVR ever embrace electronics? It never really became apparent did it?

I would love to know. biggrin

I needed to swap the indicator relay in both my S and my Tamora for an 'LED' version when I fitted LED bulbs. I would be surprised if they did anything different in the V8s.

Which one of these is a serious question? The clock is electronic. Does that help? laugh

Only when the tune resistor has a broken wire - then it's apparent, but not until after three weeks of searching for the problem. thumbup

These are the Nissan Terrano units which are slightly better looking
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VALEO-085200-Indicator-L...
This is for a brand new complete unit, although they are sold as 'handed' it is merely a matter of turning the lens upside down to change the handing. They are dead easy to fit.
