If I SORN my car today (27th), can I still use it to the end of the month?

The website seems to indicate that the car is SORN'd from when you hit the button, but you lose the remaining tax upto the end of the month. I say "seems to indicate" as nothing is specifically written, and I've not been able to confirm my suspicions.

I doubt they've changed it with their recent changes, but tax has always become void as soon as SORN has been applied. So the rebate on tax should be issued be from the start of November.

I understand that the rebate starts from November, but I just want to know if I can use the car during the period that I will have have paid for. I suspect not, but can't find it written anywhere.

No you cant use the car, as the tax ceases the moment you apply SORN, be it online or via the PO.

You might get away with driving the car the rest of the day from the time you apply SORN (depending on how quickly it's applied to the system) but the last car I SORN'd that had active tax was on the system and showing marked as SORN within 24 hours.

Oh well, let's hope the website is working on the last day of the month, or I'll try again in a month's time. I'm not going to be without a car, or give them more money than I need to smile.

OK, I'll bite. Why would you do that rather than wait for another 4 days?

I can't guarantee to be at home. I was expecting the website to allow you to do things in advance, but hey-ho, it's the Government and they don't plan, so why should they expect any of us to plan either?

Made a SORN yesterday on a car taxed to 31/10- DVLA confirmation says that SORN applies wef 1 Nov so it would appear that you are still taxed upto the 31st

Seriously? In the 21st century, you don't need to be at home, There are plenty of ways to access the internet when out and about. Mobile phone, internet cafe, public library, etc. All you need is to have with you the 11 digit number from your V5C.

I've been meaning to do the mootorcycle sometime this month so I thought I'd grab a couple of screenshots - it's taxed till End of Feb 2015 and I doubt I'm going to use it before then

Applying (SORN start date 01 October 2014)

Applied and confirmed

So it's backdated the SORN to 1st of October

- will that mean I get October - Feb as fully refunded (of course it won't - I'll only get full months November to Feb inc)
- Does that mean it was untaxed when I rode it earlier in October - I doubt it as it had valid VED at the time

It just means the system is not very joined up - no surprise there

And I also need the DVLA wbsite to be working at 2330 on the 31st. Can you guarantee that?

There really should be no reason that ved is calculated on a monthly basis now. It should be paid/refunded on a daily pro rata. If I could tax my car for just the days I used it I'd be quids in!

Only if you want to use the car up to 23:30. smile

Slightly OT, but re-taxing a car when it's been on SORN, can you do it a couple of days before the start of the month you want it to start? Or does it have to be done from the 1st?

I'd like the option.

You could. Previously, after around the 5th of the month, there was the option to start tax this month, or next. I assume it is still the same. It was after the 15th at the PO, IIRC.

[edit] Just gone online to tax the car that is currently SORN'd. There is no option to tax it from next month.

I am totally frustrated at this. I suppose, in their defence, the system is setup to maximise the chances of you making a mistake (or forgetting something) that costs you money.

Fortunately, I don't need the cars, so I should be able to SORN on the 31st and tax on the 1st.

I've just spoken to DVLA, and the VED is voided when the SORN button is pressed, so the vehicle will not be "taxed".

And the Government would be quids out. So now you know why it's monthly not daily!
