Hi Guys
I'm trying to help my son's girlfriend and her VW Beetle window. We've looked on web, seen YouTube etc but can't find an answer. I’m hoping that I may get some help here.
The driver's window stopped going up and down and an initial web search indicated this was the regulator and a repair kit was duly ordered and fitted. This lasted seconds only, the cable in the motor driven drum got mangled. It was assumed that it had been fitted wrongly so another was bought!!
We fitted this second regulator kit this evening, only to find that it makes a lot of ‘graunching’ noise when driving up and down. Even with the door panel removed and no window to lift the whole thing doesn’t move smoothly. The cable goes tight and loose, depending on the direction the motor is driving.
I’m at a loss what is wrong and would appreciate some suggestions and am anticipating that someone on here may have the answer?!
Thanks, Steve

No experience of the Beetle, but my girlfriend has a VW Golf MK4 and I recently had the same problem - window fell in the door, bought new clips (had sheared) only to find the drum had seized (turned out the cable got all mangled and jammed).

Replaced the drum only to find the damned thing still didn't work - I'd removed the motor (to replace the drum), but while I did back up to a sensible torque level it turned out that I had to back the screws on the motor off a little for it to operate correctly.

No promises though!
