How might that be achieved? I really can't see a way of effective prevention, given the realitity of where these people are coming from and their intended destinations.
Pay the smugglers enough money to ensure no illegal vessels depart those shores. The numbers travelling (and dying) are now going through the roof and the Italians cannot cope. Unless Europe gets help on the African side (something like what Gaddafi used to do for us) this problems will continue to get worse.

Hundreds of people are feared to have drowned after a boat carrying up to 700 migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea, the Italian coastguard says.
A major rescue operation is under way after the vessel carrying "between 500 and 700 migrants" capsized at midnight local time, in Libyan waters south of the Italian island of Lampedusa.
So far 28 people have been rescued.
Since the start of the year, at least 900 other migrants are thought to have died crossing the Mediterranean Sea.
In the past week alone, Italy's coastguard rescued 10,000 migrants whose vessels ran into trouble.

Helping people in desperate situations is the humane thing to do. With more than 100 people dying each minute, some in dreadful circumstances, who decides where, when and how this country intervenes? There are limited resources. Every severe winter tens of thousands of Brits die premature cold-related deaths but little seems to be done - it can't be because they're white and old from a country with self-loathing politicians rather than young and non-white from another place with equally useless politicians.
We have a generous Aid budget which the Independent Commission for Aid Impact says has only ‘limited evidence’ that it made a real difference in the world’s poorest countries and that in some cases it may even have made problems worse. Surely this (story) is where we could spend some of that money asnd 'aid' people who need help and actually make a difference, it certainly seems preferable to adding another mansion/yacht/jet/supercar/habit to a tinpot's existing collection of spoils.

Desperate people make unwise decision to cross dangerous water and it's somehow the Tories fault.Over $1T dollars have been sent as aid to Africa and all that has happened is the number of people there has doubled.
I think helping them is part of the problem.

FFS Mojocvh. Every comment you post is anti Tory, anti Private enterprise, anti capitalist. And on each one yiu make a price of yourself. Everyone is entitled to opinions, but yours are just sooooo predictable, boring, and irrelevant. What about warmongering Labour who took us into Iraq?

In terms of what I posted, you'd need pictures of them drowning. That's the desperate situations I was referring to, in terms of rescue (thread title).
I'm not talking about encouraging economic migrants, but pulling people who are already in the water out of it before hundreds of them die.
If they're already in the water, it's too late to stop them getting on the boats, though that's another issue of course.

Yes, it's really the only sustainable option and the best in the long term. The west cannot possibly cope with all the refugees if left uncontrolled. It actually harms both parties, the only winners are a few of these economic migrants who get lucky. The majority of these boat people are criminals, deliberately trying to enter countries illegally for financial gain. As opposed to genuinely desperate refugees houses in UN camps or fleeing war zones.
Libya are trying to stop the problem at their Southern borders but the inertia of getting the plans off the ground is mired in political mud. There's also the tribal aspect of that area and it takes great internal diplomacy for them to get all the ducks in a row before they can get it to work to any degree.

I'm all for assisting those who get into difficulties, however they should be brought on board and IMMEDIATELY returned to Libya and their boats sunk. If this is done often enough, and if necessary forcefully, the problem will go away.We should also stop ALL financial aid to these countries as it only goes into the war-chests of the totalitarian war leaders, NONE gets through to the hungry. Anything else is just closing our eyes to the realities of what goes on in these countries, or just weak-kneed socialist self-hatred wanting more illegal immigration into our countries.
The EU is FULL............
