Woot bounce I carried out a factory reset on the 2012 N7 and it is MUCH better, I haven't had a huge amount of time to use it but it appears to be a massive improvement! Thanks for the help.

Just posted in the Nexus 7 thread about this. I too did the factory reset today on my 2012 Nexus, and it's worked wonders! Chrome is a bit rusty, but everything else is snappy. Disappointed that I didn't know this worked until now, as mine has been in a draw since November. It was a paperweight until today; absolutely unusable.

How the heck do you do a full device backup, so status of the various games isn't lost? I think my son would lynch me if he had to go back to square one ...

What games are you talking about? A lot of them can be synced through a google account these days.

most Apps store their data in /sdcard/Android/Data/.. or obb/.. or both.

Connect to a PC via USB and drag and drop these folders to PC. Then Drag and drop back again when reset is done.

But to find all files as they can be put in other places, then Download ES File explorer and have a look around.

There is an app called Helium that can do a full device backup.

Clearing the cache partition works wonders on the N7.

I was put off by the instructions to clear the cache, the reset was really straightforward and everything synced back via NFC from my Nexus 4. It was a lot easier than following the cache clearing instructions!

I don't play games so that wasn't an issue for me....

I've just factory reset my mark-1 N7. I particularly like the way it uses NFC to sync with my N4 but it still took ages to rebuild itself and it hasn't yet sync'd my profile pic from wherever it gets it.

And it's still slow. Not a parch on my N4. Think I'll gift the N7 to the kids.

Is the new N9 spectacular? I'm tempted.

Gah, still having problems with my N4 (5.0.1) & WiFi connection but it tends to only be my home network it has troubles with. Factory reset didn't appear much benefit frown

Home broadband investigation next to see the issue isn't there

Does 5.0.2 fix the problems on early N7's

I got my mother a Nexus 7 when they first came out, the Lollypop update has made it unusable. Its constantly lagging and crashing.

We also have a couple of other Nexus 7's in the family and I've told them not to upgrade.

Didn't fix mine, still lags and random reboots.

I'm thinking of selling my 2012 N7 because I've just bought a HP Stream 7 Windows tablet (at £75 inc VAT it seemed like worth a punt), although I will be keeping my 2013 N7. I don't really need three 7" tablets.

Anyway, before I sell 2012 N7 I think I will do a Factory Image reset to KitKat and let the next owner decide if they want to stick Lollipop on it or not.

Bugger. Looks like its stuffed then frown

I can't believe they get away with killling a device with an update, and not having a means of rolling back. Its almost like they want to force you to buy a newer device.

There is a means of rolling back. You can sideload an earlier image or do a full clean Factory Image install (which is what I'm intending to do). The latter is equivalent to doing a Factory Reset though - ie. you lose all data and settings.

But it's not like Apple where, if you don't like the latest update of iOS, then you *can't* roll back at all.

I'm not sure my 70yo mum could deal with "sideloading an earlier image" smile She can cope with installing apps from the playstore, and adjusting settings, but thats it.

I'm keeping my first gen N7 on KitKat, even though its downloaded the 5.0.2 update.

Works fine so see no reason to update it.

Ah, ok. Fair enough. There is no PlayStore mechanism for downgrading.
