Ok, here is an article which was on the local news last night:

http://www.itv.com/news/granada/update/2014-10-27/...

AS far as I was aware, crowd funding was to prove the support for a service/etc, and show to the provider of such services that they would not be out of pocket. E.g. local bus route, which to the bus companies does not look viable, but people agree to fund it themselves, or to bring a particular artist to do a gig at a town they would not normally consider.

Am I missing the point, with this, or has this guy got the wrong end of the stick, and is trying to raise capital for a service that no one has particularly requested?

Crowd funding is a way any business can raise funding for any project. Investors tend to be smaller and do so because the returns they can get are better than investing in banks and businesses also get better rates for the money they borrow.

Looks like normal crowdfunding to me check out lot's of pitches on places like:

kickstarter.com for more profjects like the waxi where your pledge gets you a voucher for example for the product/service in return
rebuildingsociety.com where established business's ask for loans
crowdcube.com where people typically give away equity
emoneyunion.com which is a peer2peer credit union

i.e. it's a rapidly expnding sector with diverse niches emerging.
