Just wondered if everything with the nova box on my blackbird is fine. When driving normal forward its quiet.

But when driving in reverse the box is very loud and makes a metal ratling sound.

Didn't drive faster then maybe 10miles in reverse but the sound tells me not to drive faster!

I don't feel embrassed by the noise, but want to be sure that this is normal and there is nothing wrong with my box.

How do your reverse boxes sound like?

regards

Christoph

I have one in my JW Fireblade. Its quite loud forward and reverse which is subjective over the tinternet.... also when did you last swap the oil anmd what did you put in it? Nova told me a few years ago to use some redline heavy shock proof stuff, they now say ATF or 5-40 engine oil.

Why not take the drain plug out, which IIRC has a magnetic pickup in it. Anymore than a smearing of very fine particles (grey paste) and I'd be swapping the chain. I did mine earlier this year as a precaution, chains are cheap at 20 quid and a mornings time to swap it compared to a new box from Nova. When i looked at it you could see contact marks from the teeth on the part of the chain that rotates on the pins between the links.
edited to add that I last swapped it about 3 years ago but I don't drive as much as I should, it'd done about 1k miles max of which about 60% of that was on track.

Its a pleasure.

In terms of oil you can put what you like in it obviously but Nova now recommend ATF or 5/40 engine oil.

I would have thought you'd have wanted some sort of shock protection from the EP additive pack in a gear oil, nova obviously think other wise though.

"Lubrication is by splash and requires 120ml of any multipurpose ATF or light engine oil; (5W-40). A level plug and magnetic drain plug are also included"

Hey,

i just removed the drain plug and there was already a part of the chain hanging on it and lots of shavings.

So drained the box, the oil was red but it was only about 50ml in there.

Then i opened the box, from the internal it still looks fine. Not much wear to see.
How do you get the chain out? I could not get the lower chain gear out.

I gladly have a spare chain. So i hope i will get away with a good clean, new chain and fresh oil.
That service was really overdue.

What is curious, i found that part of the chain, but can´t see a missing part on the chain...hopefully this mystery will dissolve once the chain is out.

Will let you hear how thing go on.

Sounds like you had a close escape and caught it just in time.

It's pretty simple to get the chain out. You split the casing in half and pull out the two sprockets together with the chain.

Having red oil in there suggests ATF or if it was almost like raspberry yoghurt the red line soundproof oil.

Okay,

i tired that, but can´t get the lower sprocket out.
Are you sure, that i don´t have to unbolt the 30mm nut from the drive flange outside of the box?
I tried to unbolt the nut, but also failed as its torqued down very strong.

I will post some pics this evening.

Ahhh yes you're correct I had forgotten, its been a while since I last did mine. you do have to remove the large nuts that are"staked"

I can't remember the torque value if I'm honest, being a little naughty I just loctited and reused the old nut tweeking it a little further round than before I removed in order to be able to tap a fresh part the nut into the groove.

They aren't that tight if you unpick the part that's peened over into the groove in the shaft. A fine slotted screw driver works well for this.

Yes i just did it the same way as you did. Worked fine, box is already reassembled.

The old chain still looked fine and out of some marks on the inside from the casing, that have been caused by this sleeve that was rattling around in there everything was in sound condition.

But where the heck is that sleeve from?
Its out of hardened steel, 11mm long, outer diameter 6,3mm inner dia 4,5mm.

I searched for a place where it could be from but coudn´t find! Its definite not from the chain, as the diameters don´t match.

The only place where i could imagine that it belongs to is the leaver, that engages the dogs for clockwise and anticlockwise rotation.
In this one is a unused hole but with a smaller diameter than this sleeve. And even it would belong there, i can´t imagine for what.

Anyway, for precaution i will change the oil another time after the first drive as there was a fair amount of dirt in there.

Thanks for your help.
