Looking into importing a Jaguar MK10 from USA. Web search has given me conflicting info suggesting that IT would be subject to 10% import duty and VAT. Another site said not because it originated from the UK. What is the correct position? Any links appreciated

If it's over 30 years old no duty and only 5% vat.
Fact.. I did it recently..

So if I bought a 1972 car for £10k and paid a £1k to ship it back, that would be £11k, no duty, plus 5% vat, £550, total for the car at the port in UK would be £11,550? Correct?

That's right.. The 5% is on the total . Car invoice plus shipping.
My shipping from usa ,Los Angeles was $1800 dollars, but I am sure you can get it done cheaper.
On top of that their will be about £200- £300 for customs clearances etc..
I still think you can get some good bargains in usa..

Interesting, I thought the duty was 10% and vat 20% which made the car untenable.

There's a pair of them I was considering importing to sell on.

There is no "one rule fits all" as far as VAT and Duty is concerned. It depends on the where the car was manufactured, first registered , the car's historic significance etc.

I've imported a few cars and you are best off to talk to a specialist importer or even HMRC who are helpful.

A car of historic significance for example may attaract favourable duty and vat rates but for example when I imported a 1960's Alfa Romeo from outside of the EU, HMRC asked for 10% duty and 20% VAT.

Duty is calculated at the landed price incl shipping, vat on top.

5% vat as long as car over 30 years old. No duty..
