Heading over at the weekend. Any good places to go? Places not to visit?

Also I normally use a shuttle service/taxi, but a hire car was £60 for the week. Easy to find my way from Paphos airport?

I'll e on my own for a few of the days so may find myself just relaxing in the sun.

Thanks.

If you've got a hire car, you'll be able to explore the surrounding areas.

Go see the mosaics in Paphos. Very impressive

I hear that Latsi (about an hour north of Coral Bay) is very pleasant and worth a visit.

Cyprus as a Holiday destination will close down this weekend, so expect it to be quiet

Nice. It's for my friends wedding. So I'm not complaining if it's quiet. smile

I imagine a few days will be spent drinking, but wouldn't mind having a drive around and just getting lost. Any tips on driving out there?

Stayed there in July. Had hire car and yes, real easy to find from airport. Also very easy to find your way around generally.

Cautiously! Give the locals room, some don't give a crap but over all they arent bad.

Use the horn a lot, enjoy the hustle. Amber on traffic lights is when to start honking or driving if you're at the front. When in Rome and all that.

I found driving over there hilarious and good fun. Keep an eye out for Russians in Hypercars, not sure if he's still about in Limassol, but there was a chap with a Carrera GT and drove it like he stole it constantly.

Speed limits are fairly well enforced on the highways, but the coastal roads are far more relaxing and infinitely better and speeding isn't really an option and you wont want to with the beautiful scenery.

In fact, if you get the chance for a good 4/5 hours of pottering, take the coastal road (B6) from Paphos to Aiya Napa and back, there are ruins, lookouts, mosaics, amphitheatres etc etc etc all the way along.

Its also worth crossing the line to Famagusta when you get to the Napa end. On the way back, as you are halfway between Larnaca and Limassol you'll see the Hawaii Grand hotel on your left. If you cross the road there there are two bars, a Russian one (Chesters) and a Cypriot one just behind, talk to George and his wife over a meal and learn about the Turkish invasion from a resident of 'Gusta' one of the most heartwrenching stories I've ever heard, and some of the most welcoming people I've had the joy to meet.

Oh and a drive over Olympus on the B, C and D roads is well worth a go, as is a trip into the crazy maze that is Nicosia

Head up into the Troodos mountains, it's lovely up there. Get off the beaten path.

But a bit chilly this time of year. Take a coat.

Thanks everyone.

I'm expecting it to be a bit of booze fest, but if I get up early I should be able to do some exploring and catch up with the group later.

I've got to second that...last year we set off from Paphos into the mountains early in the morning and spent a day up there driving round the back roads. We avoided the 'main' roads wherever possible and just went where we felt like going. We found some wonderful little villages, a lot of locals giving us the 'are you lost?' look as we drove past. A great day out.

One other thing I found is that some roads (even in Paphos) just come to a dead end. There is a sign for a turn about 200m prior but after that, nothing to say that it was going to stop...just a fence and scrubland at the end of the road!

Stayed in Coral Bay about 10 years ago and hired a car to get around. I agree about the mountains, I can't remember the time of year we went, but it was off season, about 20c in Coral Bay but was shocked to discover people Skiing up in the mountains! Never imagined they would see any snow over there!

Explore the Akamas Peninsula to the west of Coral Bay. It's off the beaten track with dirt roads and lots of hiking/biking trails.

Latchi, as suggested above for its fish restaurants. Everything is spanking fresh - choose from that day's catch - unlike the fish served in much of Cyprus which is boggo frozen farmed salmon and river cobbler.

Dont know if the OP is into diving, but if they are, then I recommend finding the time to dive the zenobia. it's on the top ten wreck list and it's a great dive, if a little busy in high season.

If the OP is still reading this - drive up to Polis and have an evening meal at Moustakallis BBQ restaurant.
