PH has come up gold for present suggestions in the past so I'm hoping for another.

My partner has always wanted to visit South Africa and go on safari. She has a (very!) significant birthday coming up so we're going to go for it and have booked a trip, leaving (for various reasons) about a month after the actual birthday.

Now the trip is the big thing for her birthday, but I still want to get her something for the actual day. Something that reflects the trip and that she can keep (ie not something consumable). And it needs to be not too expensive, since the trip is the expensive bit - maybe up to £200?

Any thoughts all?

Chain mail vest or perhaps a ballistic bra?

You can't be too careful around there.

You are better to get that sort of thing there, rather than before you go.

How about some nice springbok steaks?

I went to Cape Town about 18 months ago and liked it so much that we're going back for Christmas and New Year. It's an amazing place and I can't wait to go back. Coincidentally I did buy the Mrs a rather nice 2ct diamond last time we were there. We did a 3 day luxury Safari at Aguila Game Resort and we took a few days to discover the wine regions and stayed in a little mountain cottage. The restaurants are amazing especially Buon Vivant.

2 weeks isn't long enough, you'll love it

Ebola.
Should've got further south by the time you go. And it's free.

How about something that she can use whilst on holiday, like a nice set of binoculars for the safari?

That's a really good suggestion. If we didn't have a pair already it'd be spot on.

Good thinking though.

Adopt a Madonna or an Angelina while you're there, I hear it's what all the Africans are doing.

Just look her in the eyes and tell her "It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you...."

You'll need two pairs, unless one of you has eagle eyes. If she has an SLR a good (ish) telephoto lens is essential. (Or a 50-200/300 that will allow her to keep the same lens on and avoid lens changes in a dusty environment.)

What about a wood carved lion or a voodoo mask -that's the usual st that people buy. Or a fake tag heuer watch perhaps?
