I was wondering, with many retail garages offering oil change services for under £100, is this worth doing every few thousand miles, just to keep the oil fresh between proper services? Is there any benefit in this, i.e. increase engine life.

I realise many won't trust their loved one with a retail mechanic, but an oil change is so basic, I'm not concerned. I'd do it myself, but if I can pay someone under £100 to do it including an AM filter and the recommended oil, it hardly seems worth it.

No

Unless you are tracking the car regularly or racing it, then there is no need. Modern oils do not break down like old mineral oils did in years long gone. Other manufacturer cars will do 18 - 20K between oil services and I don't see any issues with that.

A complete waste of money IMHO, so send me £100 and i will pretend to change your oil and filter for you biggrin

OK..... I just need your bank details, DoB and home address? wink

I guess it's an old mindset then that the more often you change it the longer your engine will last.

Depends what kind of driving you do.

If your car sees frequent short journeys and doesn't get time to fully warm up with/ or lots of idling time I would change the oil more frequently than AM specify.

When the engine is cold the fuel mixture is enriched to enable the engine to run, but some of the extra fuel in the cylinders can end up unburnt.

Oil dilution caused by unburnt fuel finding its way into the oil via the cylinder walls can cause increased wear of engine components, lower oil pressure and reduced oil viscosity regardless of whether mineral or synthetic oils are used.

Barnezy, IIRC from an old Costco and JCT600 bill, I don't think you would get the parts for less than £100 !!! smile

at retail cost there is more than £100 of oil in a Vantage + filter

Ive always asked the question of many that love to do the extra maintenance...exactly who are you keeping it in good Nick for?

few own a car from new, control the running in and oil changes for the lifetime of the vehicle.....so you can look after it and the 5th or 6 th owner at 200k miles will thank you for it wink

...just use it as normal, routine maint as required and enjoy it.....

The only caveat I'd apply, Bogie, is that some may actually enjoy doing the maintenance wink

Others - Quinny for example - are just tight-fisted yes

Well... I bought mine new, controlled the running-in process and the oil changes from day one (now 5 years in and no plan to sell). I don't cover enough miles annually (due to lack of time) to require an oil change more often than at the annual service, but if I thought there would be any benefit, I'd do it. If, as Wayne noted, you do a lot of short trips or other things that are hard on oil as he discussed, I would reconsider.

good for you mate, I reckon you are in the minority these days with the majority purchased on 3 year rental(pcp) deals and traded in regularly smile

the routine manufacturer specified maintenance plays on the safe side, so unless you are doing trackdays every week or running it through a desert rally, I reckon an oil change every 10K/12 months is more than enough

many of us dont even manage 10K/12 months these days .....queue the threads for low mileage users "only done 2k miles this year, do I REALLY have to get it serviced?"

eeerrr....proabably not,but its good to have a check over and good for history/resale value......

I agree. I don't get close to 10K miles a year, but I always do the annual service (including, of course, the oil change). With modern oiling systems and oils, I think the recommended intervals are fine, at least in the absence of harsh use as you described. Even though my annual mileage is low (again due to lack of time rather than an effort to keep the mileage low), various things, including water and fuel, can contaminate the oil, so the annual change seems like a good idea. All things considered, it's not that expensive. That said, what I was trying to say is that, for me, I take car of the car because I like to, not because I'm worried -- or not -- about the next owner.
