I have a new bike on the way, and whilst there is still space in the garage and taking the n+1 rule into account I'm keeping the old bike, there is a lot of sentimental value to this one...

It's got some nice bits on it, so was thinking of a bit of a downgrade, just to put a bit of money in my back pocket, my thoughts are as below, what do you think I could save, and is the saving worth the downgrade?

Hope X2 brakes, replace with some Shimano Deore / SLX (I already have deore on another bike and rate them)
Reverb seat post (not in pic) BNIB warranty replacement.
2x10 XT Groupset replace with single speed set up
Fox Float Forks, replace with rigids.

I'm thinking by selling the above and buying replacement parts I could get around £300 back, is that living in cookoo land?

Anything else? Most other parts are fairly old so probably not worth changing.

What's needed to go single speed?

Second hand mtb market is reknowned for being tight and its close to Christmas so finding buyers will be tougher. You could get £300 for all the parts listed but I dont know what forks you would be able to run to compensate for that sort of travel length. Most rigid forks are too short to replace longer trvel forks and will bugger up the geometry. If you did find a pair, you''d be looking at at least £100.

FWIW I'd keep the Hope brakes on the bike because you will only get for them, what Deore costs, then put the groupset aside for a future project. Sell the seatpost and the forks (as the steerer been cut, have they been serviced?), that should net you £200-£250 and buy some rigid forks if you can find some that will fit.

To go single speed, you just need a chain tensioner and a DMR singlespeed spacer kit assuming you use the XT cranks, otherwise you will need a new chainset.

To be honest, it all seems like a lot of faff and unless you reuse parts of the XT groupset you will end up spending all the money from the sales of the post and forks.

I had a similar conundrum with my XTC so decided to keep that (well, pass it on to one of my boys) and build a budget rigid SS from scratch. Mostly cos a Rigid SS should really be a steel 29er imho.

Bits have started arriving so I might do a build thread.

Forks wise, I didn't know if a set of 29er rigids would work and not bugger up the geo too much? I need something that will achieve the equivalent of 130-140mm. The forks have been serviced a couple of years ago, but they have spent a bit of time in the Alps and Wales since.

I had seen some slightly older looking brakes sell for £150 ish posted on ebay, I don't really want to go down the ebay route but if I could get similar money (out of ebay) for mine then its not a bad saving - deores can be had for £65 on a good day.

Single speed may not achieve much by the sounds of it, the biggest value items (cranks) will have to be kept... Maybe do it but keep everything for spares (or another build!)

Not sure - although Second Hand, it is brand new and boxed - I was hoping for something around £160, the cheapest I have seen in the same size etc is about £180, is that a good enough saving?

I'd be interested in reading that thread...

Maybe my 29er should become a Rigid SS, it is my "winter bike" after all - less things to go wrong then!

I can get one cheaper from a shop with MMX mount which would be less cluttered. Cheers for the price though. And yes a build thread is a must.
