The F Type has to be the 'dirtiest' sounding car on the road at the moment.
Absolutely love it.

I think whilst it sounds great at full chat that the popping is 'small penis' territory. 'Look at me, my car pops like a real race car.....' Certainly the case in London anyway.
Not sure if I'd describe the F-Type as 'small penis territory'.
I think it's an extremely handsome and sophisticated looking car (certainly in coupe form) which sounds completely bonkers.
Brings a smile to my face anyway.
Wish my Z4MC was a bit more insane sounding. It looks daft enough.
Didn't Chris Harris describe the F-Type as a sounding like an old school american muscle car ?

s
Don't get me wrong it has nothing to do with the car, I love it. I was referring to the exhaust and the artificial popping of the exhaust. It is too much when pootling around London, makes you look a bit of a tool. Not the car but the over-dramatic noise which actually sounds artificial when travelling at 15-30 MPH.

Understood.
Well it certainly has an idiosyncratic street presence for a performance Jaguar.
Unlike my mota, which sounds like a bee in a jam jar.

Anything sounds better than my bicycle smile but at least I'm saving the planet....

Good article. I cant believe how many idiots on here read this wrong.

It's not about loud exhausts, not about pops and bangs or awesome sounds. It's about how manufacturers create FAKE sounds or simulate sounds to make the car sound more interesting than it is. Or make it sound like old tuned engines did by adding extra code in the ecu map. That is GAY and is the same as excessive use of styled exhaust tips. Whats next? Electric cars with V8 sound from speakers all around?

Rant over.

Too many responses here to read them all, but if it hasn't been said already 'No Thank You' in German is usually simply 'Danke', no need for a 'nein'!
Yes, I know that may be confusing....

.......Not a lime green one ? Saw one like that in Winchmore hill recently, sounded like an old chevy V8 running on six cylinders, until he managed to floor it. Then it sounded sweet............For a couple of seconds !!

Wowwawiwa, so nowadays you can only enjoy fresh air and open-top-motoring if the weather is of an exactly certain BlymieCharlie-approved type or he judges you as being vain...

judge Well I judge you as being ridiculously oblivious as to why people decide to lower their roofs. FYI very usually any time you can put the roof down is when you should put the roof down. Just last week I was driving top down so I could get at least a bit of fresh air and sunshine on that hectic week of being stuck in the office!

Absolutely right. It's fking horrible. It might as well be coming through a speaker. It's a contrived, tacky, tasteless nonsense and it makes new cars sound ste. Absolute ste.

No car, sports or otherwise, should shout about itself like that. It's embarrassing. It's just a fking Boxter. Lovely car, looks great, stellar engine, but it's just a (3.4l?) six - a very smooth, every day one at that. I'm embarrassed for those who think its acceptable, or for those who somehow think this helps with the theatre, the sense of occasion of driving - it bloody well doesn't. It's like a fking piss-take of a car. Just knowing that it's not real is enough, even before you realise you're getting the exact same pops and bangs every time you lift off the throttle.

I'm annoyed by it, if you haven't guessed. Cars have become computer controlled imitations of cars, and a combination of children who've grown up playing racing games, and folk who buy cars but aren't really into cars, have decided that this is a good thing.

Porsche should know better than to cater to idiots and children.

For this alone, you get two thumbs up Trent.

And you're not wrong. A pop and bang on overrun should be earned.

All this thread proves is that PH is full of miserable b*st*rds trying to "out mature" themselves.

For the 3rd time in the thread - the cars have f***ing buttons so if you buy the damned things you don't NEED to drive around that cesspit that is London in noisy mode.

To those that asert that cars should only make noises when driven at 10/10ths - that just means nobody gets to hear them. I don't do track days. My nearest track is over 100 miles away from me and I've got better things to do with my time than spend a weekend and hundreds of pounds every time I want my car to make less mundane noises. I'm quite happy for my cars to make contrived noises. Even my Cerbera can be mapped not to do it, but I don't care what some uber-mature tosser thinks of me if my car bangs on 6/10ths driving. My XF will do it if I manually change down for roundabouts in cities.

Tough luck.

I have a "pops & bangs" map as one of the selectable maps on the Syvecs ECU on my Sagaris but I rarely use it as, quite frankly, it genuinely sounds like it is damaging the engine.

It's quite amusing when used sparingly though. Especially in a tunnel -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0uzHiNYndsbiggrin
Can I ask about your camera set up please? External mic? Either way it captures the sound brilliantly!!
Right at the end of the video there are some stills that show what I did. It was two GoPro Hero 3 Silver cameras, one out on a pole behind the car, and the mics were two unpowered lapel mics feeding into a 2x mono to 1x stereo Y-adaptor and then into one of the cameras. The mics were mounted externally by the rear wing and then fed into the car under the rear hatch.

If we are being truly honest many of us like a bit of fantasy with our performance cars at a lot less than 10/10ths. Having been involved with road rallying in the eighties in the days of national championships true commitment is worth a lot more than power or even talent to some degree, which of course has no place on public roads.

At the same time I owned a stock Sunbeam Ti with twin 40s and standard exhaust and it popped and banged like a good 'un. Maybe shallow but it made me feel good, like I had a rally car. Nothing much has changed with the feel good factor many of us desire from cars we can relate to performance cars or motorsport in some way yet still being on the right side of responsible. If not the case for the EU banning such cars would be completely indefensible.

I am all for the manufacturers making drivers feel good, rather the sound was more in the car than annoying the neighbourhood and manufacturers will continue to come under increasing pressure to reduce external noise emissions.

The Golf R and BMW M135i amongst others come under fire for fake sounds but compared to my pure and natural Sunbeam Ti they can sound far more visceral yet have the optionality to turn up or down to suit mood, fitting the multiple personality of these practical family hot hatches.

Just to add on the Golf R (I own one) the initial batch including those doing the rounds with journalists had the internal sound actuator turned right up, mainstream production models are much more subtle. The device can easily be switched off or taken to a VW dealer or local mechanic with VCDS and turned to whatever setting the customer prefers - there is no need to live with it as suggested in the article.

Personally I think we are very lucky to have the option.

Very good point. My late Dad was an organ builder and tuner in his early life. Of course he hated the emergence of electronic organs that made their way into churches yet even he had to concede that as they developed the sound (especially at low volumes) was on a par, it was the loss of his craftsmanship tuning those pipes that he mourned. Yet it is a new breed of talent that can produce the very same sounds using different methods. Pipe organs didn't form naturally, the same with exhaust sounds on sports cars of yesteryear.

In his later years my Dad had an electronic organ in his house and could play it loud with headphones on, you wouldn't want to be living next to a house with a pipe organ - the same is becoming true with cars - the sounds are more accessible to the masses. I am sure the novelty would soon where off in a street full of F40s smile

I draw the line at totally fake noise. I can live with the car having some extra fueling on overrun and I can live with switchable exhaust flaps.

But if I understand correctly, cars like the audi SQ5 have a 'sound actuator' which I believe is a loud speaker in the exhaust system which pumps a V8 sound track into a diesel SUV.... That's just appalling (appologies if I've miss understood the system)
