I have an asymmetrically worn tyre on my car and a couple of *good* part worn spares in my garage. Two of the three local tyre fitters won't fit them for me because I didn't buy from them (the real reason - not the reasons given). Half of me sort of agrees with this as restaurants don't normally let you consume your own food and drink at their tables but the excuses given rankle a bit.

One place wont change them because they can't warranty my tyre even though I haven't asked them too.

Another won't because they can't guarantee the legality of the tyre ( it's an AT tyre with ~8mm of tread left).

Fortunately there is a local place that will change it for me. They are my preferred place anyway but have a couple of tyre fitters off sick today so couldmt do it for me there and then, as they usually do, hence my looking elsewhere for a change. Lesson learned - stay loyal and try again tomorrow..!!

I did ask the other two how they dealt with people wanting to change to their winter tyres, and both said they wouldn't do it unless they supplied the tyres "new" each time.

In Poland, every single tyre fitter changes peoples' winter tyres twice a year (off and on) and no doubt benefits from it (financially).

Minor moan... Not even a rant. Curious if others have any similar experiences or comments.

This was covered in general gassing a couple of days ago.

The answer seemed to be its due to insurance IiRC

In my experience most small tyres places are happy to swap tyres for you at a charge of around £10-12 per corner. Cash in hand of course.

£20-£25 for 15 mins work isn't bad going..

A bit short sighted by the tyre fitter, but I guess it's his perogative.

My local fitter will change and balance for £10 a corner (which is pricey I suppose, but it's not something I can do myself)

At the end of the day it's their decision to do this or not. It's their business and they can run it how they want, it doesn't matter if someone else will do it or whether us outsiders think they're right or wrong, it's not our decision to make for them.

I can see why they wouldn't want to get involved though, if something goes wrong the average punter will be going back to them to sort it out, not the guy on Ebay they bought this bargain tyre from so they're setting themselves up for a certain amount of embuggerance by fitting used tyres they haven't supplied themselves.

Most motor trade policies will exclude fitting second hand tyres under the Public Liability section.

The cover can be added back in, but it is expensive from memory.

£10 is cheap !

A decent tyre machine and balancer is about £5k (cheaper versions are availabe but are generally cack)

At £10 a tyre, assuming 20 minutes from starting the job to finishing it, that is 166 hours of work just to pay for the machine and nothing else wink

Excellent use of embuggerance!

Snap, though being honest I think £10 a corner is pretty good! 4 corners takes probably 45-60 mins, from start to finish. £40 an hour isn't much to cover everything

An hour to change four tyres?! Not unless they are some weird & wonderful spec I shouldn't think.

On a par or less than most garage labour rates.

Having posted about this on the last thread.....

So they won't fix a puncture then either because the tyre hasn't been supplied or fitted by them? Can't understand this TBH.

Btw my local guys do it for £7.50 a corner and they (up to now) do a great job no fuss.

Yep, no way an hour. I has 2 x 18" tyres fitted on Tuesday evening by one guy, total including jacking the car up, finding the locking nut, balancing etc, and paying, was 20 mins.

A good friend is a branch manager for a tyre and exhaust centre. It's liability/insurance etc etc.

Never had a problem.

In fact I have 5 x trackday tyres being delivered directly to my local fitter tomorrow so they can fit them for me on Saturday morning.

Its not a tyre their suppliers stock, so I got it myself.

Bit rubbish him not being able to fit punctures then.

I know what I think.
