Have just sold my bike engined kitcar, now thinking of selling the CLK55 AMG, and getting something that handles/ a bit more predictable!

Budget of up to £5K, would prefer less.

Must be RWD or 4WD (I would quite like to try 4WD)

Decent amount of power, does not have to be as powerful as the CLK55 but no 4 cylinder's

Decent sound track

Decent interior.

No ticking time bombs

Will only be used weekends etc, so will get little use.

I am a little stuck, all I can really think of is possibly Mitsubishi GTO? Celica GT4?

Anyone any suggestions?

you'd get a nice e36 m3 for that money. bit dated, but well built and good fun.

I have a mr2 rev 3 turbo for weekend giggles. Incredibly easy to get up to 300bhp and it's blisteringly quick and very solid. £5k will get you a minter, £3k will still get a very good one.

If you consider these, make sure it's rev3 onwards as the reliability and power is very different to earlier cars.

I've also owned an integra dc2 and thought that was brilliant fun, buts it's fwd. dont let that put you off. the lsd on those are cracking, one of the best cars ive used in snow also! I actually think they're a bit of an investment now too.

350Z? Interior probably not up to grade.

RX7? It's not a ticking time bomb, it's just high maintenance.

Great call on the 350Z, I assumed they would still be £10K+ They look a bargain at around £5K?

B6 Audi S4 Convertible?

Not a bad handler, and with a 340 bhp V8 and a manual gearbox its pretty interesting!

Perhaps a bit sedate..

But E46 330Ci?

Well built, nice sounding M54 lump. I imagine £5K will buy you a very tidy example.

I feel it would be a bit too sensible for a weekend car, I had a 328ci a few years ago when commuting, nice and comfy but wasn't sporty.

Well I'm biased but this is surely the best bargain when it comes to speed per £.

350Z is heavy and not exactly a fun weekend car.

If you can live with the slightly dull interior I'd go for the 350Z. Plenty of grunt and a fabulous sound. plus it's a great looking thing.

Probably not as nimble as an E36 M3/S2000, but you'd be surprised....

why not an early EVO or WRX? The Celica GT4 is always a good option too.

Correction. With the manual gearbox it's absolutely shocking. The auto is much, much better suited to the car. Sadly, the manual just ruins it due horribly mis-matched gear ratio's (1st is close to pointless and 6th will see you doing 4.3k rpm at 80 on the motorway) and the most awful gear change in any car I've driven.

I've owned a B6 S4 Avant auto and B7 S4 Cab manual, so have direct experience of both

Well the handling would certainly be "predictable". wink

It keeps you on your toes mate...and no one wants a torque gap (lad who we bought it off kept going on about torque gaps- I'm still clueless)
