I've got the engine stripped down at the moment and noticed that I can get to the nearside fresh air duct pipe where is joins the inlet for the car (at rear of engine above the bell housing). The offside pipe runs to the inner panel of the O/S wing so does not look too bad, but the nearside is a total blood mess; it runs above the exhaust pipes and makes changing the number 7 spark plug, a pain in the arse. Can anyone tell me why there are two pipes, do they serve different purposes and what will I lose by removing the nearside one?

If the V8 is the same as the V6 they feed the two "eyeball" vents in the centre console. I've done away with mine and capped the pipe in the bulkhead off with an aerosol lid to prevent hot engine fumes coming through.

It is and they do. This was my solution

..maybe two give a good weight distribution... wink

Best solution is to cut them off, and don't put the roof up, or open a window...looks neater, saves weight, and gives two new air hols to push cool air into the engine bay... wink

cut mine out while doing the servo, wont bother putting back. Agree with Andy power to weight, neater and get plenty of fresh air in the S

Excellent. Thanks for the replies. I wasn't sure if they supplied the rest of the heating/venting system. A chance to clear up the engine bay then.

BEst to seal up the off-cut ends so you don't get engine fumes into the cockpit....gaff a tape works well...;)

I'm thinking about doing this mod too, but don't the pipes take air to the heater to demist the windscreen?

The heater feeds the screen vents, dash side vents and the "eyeballs" in the footwells. It is a 100% re-circulation system, air is drawn in from within the car, there is no fresh air input.

Plus it is often the case that the pipes have fallen off the vents behind the dash... wink

It's quite simple really, as with all things TVR. The left feeds air to the left eyeballl and the right to the right. Am planning on sheathing both of them with a heat reflective matting to protect them as the airflow is useful n the summer with the roof on :getmecoat : all to stop sunburn while stuck in traffic you understand wink

No, don't understand.... there will be no airflow while stationary/slow moving unless you drop a couple of these in. smile

The anaconda is out!

Engine bay looks a lot better and it is now possible to see the spark plugs on the L/H side.

Sealed the intake with an aerosol cap filled with mastic.

Will get around to removing the R/H one later this week.

Now just need to clean the engine bay; spray the rocker covers; fit the rocker pedestal shims; clean up the inlet manifold; fit a new valley gasket; fit the plenum; reinstall the radiator and its support bracket, and the fan of course and then refit the bonnet!

Then clean up the garage.

So all that palarva with the 2 long tubes just to blow a bit of cool air....in a rag-top car?

I agree these 'fresh air' vent pipes are a right 'pain'. I have had to remove mine after a number of issues, including a leaking pipe giving my passenger unpleasant fumes.
On the other hand the demisting system is pretty c**p if the car is used at night, hood up. The idea of a recirculating system in such a small air space just isn't on. The cars get damp, it takes a lot to drive the damp off the screen (and the heater isnt very powerful anyway) and as soon as you stop it just condenses again everywhere. Driving with a window slightly open is fair enough, but not if that is just letting cold damp air in. I have improved my heater with a more powerful fan (Punto rad fan motor!) but I would really like to get fresh air to the heater box to improve the demisting. Given where the heater input is, it shouldnt be so difficult. I just haven't got round to working out a system!

That sounds like a very worthwhile modification Richard. I wonder if enough air would reach the heater fan if just one of those tubes were to be used for that purpose. If so, maybe the other (nearside) one could be removed so that cold air can be directed on to the air filter (and the radiator shuttered off from it) as described earlier. On my car, its the nearside one that nearly always comes off the intake when I open the bonnet.
Another project for the winter months...

Where is the inlet to the heater box? I am just thinking that if I do keep the off-side pipe (it is less of an eye-sore/hinderance under the bonnet) I could switch the pipe to the heater box.

I agree that having the window open is a pain and if it is raining, it allows the water to come in.
