For a limited period starting from 28 November, "2001" is being released again for a cinematic showing .

I've not seen it in a cinema since 1979 when it was re-released on the back of the success of "Star Wars".

If you haven't seen this on the big screen, this is a rare opportunity to see it as Mr Kubrick intended.

I've left my e-mail address with the BFI so they can notify where the nearest showing is to me.

Excellent smile

Thanks for that Eric, I'll raise a glass to you in the pub afterwards for the reminder.

A lot of things made that film the classic that it is. The music being just one of them.

I shall look out for it. Thanks.

Watched it again recently, for the first time in ages. Despite having read the book a couple of times, it was still a bit "WTF????"

It's on at the Belmont in Aberdeen, having seen Ghostbusters last night (which was excellent) and going to Alien & Aliens tomorrow night, plus my local Vue is showing Blade Runner in a couple of weeks, 2001 would be a nice book end to some classic movies seen back on the big screen.

I was 11 when I first saw it (in 1969 - with my mother and sister) so cannot vouch for whether it is "improved" by taking any hallucinatory substances.

I have to say I'm very impressed with Vue cinemas at the mo, showing Alien and Aliens tonight, which I'm going to, 2001 in a few weeks and I've just checked and on the 14th of December they're also showing Bladerunner.

It only really made sense after reading the fairly good book.

On its own, not really.

But if you've read the book - then "yes really".

I'm going in a few days time, I hope.

Annoyingly I couldn't find a cinema close to me showing this, and I would love to see it on a proper screen, I read the book years ago, and a confusing film made sense.

If the film requires knowledge of the book in order for it to be comprehensible, is the film then lacking as a stand-alone work?

Perhaps - but we now live in a multi-media world and a lot of films have stakes in other media - such as books, comics, computer games etc. Maybe 2001 was ahead of its time.

And I like the fact that it doesn't have a clear meaning.

i recall the preface of the book, wasn't it written at the same time as the film was being made? being a true film tie-in?
