Heat wrapping your exhaust helps make it pop on the overrun

z3 3.0 - mine is an auto - and generally it would be rare if in auto mode - but push across into the manually wiggly mode and does it the whole time smile

I used to have a Merc CLK500 that, once I'd removed the front cats, crackled and banged beautifully on the overrun. The great thing was, at the time, it still passed all the emissions tests (although not legal now, I suspect).

My mr2 turbo is great at all the dramatic stuff. Nice low crackles at low speed/rpm, full on crackles on lift off and gear change, and massive crackles and pops when driving hard. It's on a Kakimoto exhaust though which is very loud.

From what others who have done the golf-tee-mod have said, my 330ci is supposed to do this on the overrun..mine does not.

I would have thought any exhaust even without heat wrapping would have had an internal temperature sufficient to ignite petrol coming through the cylinders in unburnt as a result of fuelling on trailing throttle/exhaust cycle. Heat wrapping would insulate the pipe but I can't see how that would affect the result in any way.

Carbed vehicles are great for pops and crackles on the overrun. As the throttle closes, venturi effect tends to draw fuel down the jets which makes a very rich mixture, perfects for flashing off in the exhaust.

From my own experience on standard exhaust systems, R53 Cooper S and mk2 Astra GTE 16v
Yup, my R53 will enjoy a pop-pop-pop when hot and worked hard.

The Caterham also loves to show it's appreciation of a damn good thrashing.

My 1975 Land Rover pops and bangs on the overrun. It's over advanced and running rich through a webber carb though scratchchin

Sounds good, burns fuel at an alarming rate though
