Looking for any ideas / input - with two young kids and a busy job the most convenient time for me to exercise is early in the AM and I've no problem at all in terms of getting up and getting on with it. However the problem I have is that if I exercise early on then it often leaves me feeling some combination of tired/grumpy through the day and often seems to impair my concentration whereas if I exercise later on in the day I don't get these effects. I'm sure I'm well enough hydrated. Any ideas? Could it be resolved through eating the right things before / after exercise? Or do I just need to accept that early AM exercise isn't feasible for me? Many thanks for all replies.

Odd, I do an early morning Boot Camp on a Tuesday; 6:30 for 45 minutes.

I get up at 5:30-5:45, have a banana and a glass of orange juice (I have my main breakfast when I get back) and leave the house at about 6:20, I find it really sets me up for the day and I feel great within myself.

Are you eating too much before you do your excercise?

Could you cycle to work? It's often as quick and it's effectively "free" exercise as you don't have to allocate any extra time for it.

What are you eating after the exercise? I used have similar after early morning excerise. Sorting out what I ate afterwards gave me enough energy for the day.

Thanks all. Tried it for a reasonable period of time. Was eating porridge afterwards. Perhaps need something different?

What sort of exercise are you doing early in the morning?

I workout in the mornings too and I have a protein shake / some protein after working out, otherwise I really 'fall off the edge' from a lack of nutrients. It happens to my wife in a big way if she hasn't eaten enough of the correct food.

Depending on the exercise you are doing, I would look at adding some fat and protein into your post workout meal, that should help things.

After I've done my morning BootCamp I have 3 poached eggs on two slices of toast.

Thanks. I'm doing intervals on the tread mill plus light weights. I'll try a bit more fat and protein
