ARC connection problem

Just changed my old Yamaha amp to a new one with ARC capability.
Connected to my Panasonic and all works great inc the rest of the equipment.
The problem is when I turn the TV off the amp automatically turns itself off at the same time which is great however when I turn the TV back on the amp also turns on at the same time however there is no sound.
Have to turn the amp off and on for the sound to start working again.
Was wondering if this is the norm or am I missing something in the settings.
