Just getting our garage tiled shortly (72 sqm) and the first quote we've had seems high.
He's quoting £1,600 for 3-4 days work, which seems high to me if you break it down to a daily rate. I'm supply all the materials so looking for labour only.
I normally pay contractors on a daily rate (£150-200) which is a bit higher than normal for our area.

Most self employed tilers normally work on a sqm rate, depending on location! Around me it's the norm to pay £25pm2 for ceramic and £30pm2 for porcelain. I wouldn't mind paying those rates for internal work, but an external garage seems like a lot to me.

Tillers sometimes win and sometimes lose on a metre rate. If he was doing a small bathroom floor of 4 or 5m2 it would take best part of a day and he'd be lucky to make £100, same goes for a kitchen splash back. A big area like a kitchen diner or in your case a garage is a nicer earner. The tiler I use charges me around £20m2 as I give him plenty of work, if he was doing a large area like a double garage he'd probably just charge me a day rate of £150 per day.
The guy currently doing my kitchen/diner started out as a tiler, and picked up more skills over time. His quote for labour works out at £150 a day. He has just laid 23 sq metres of porcelain floor tiles in less than 2 days as part of the 4-week build. Quite a tricky floor plan, as it included going into 3 built-in cupboards. All the skirtings and achitraves were removed though, and he spent a further day lifting the old tiles and prepping the floor.
I've seen some truly horrific tiling jobs over the years!
Not sure why it's treated as a job anyone can do! They can't .
Pay your tiler his going rate and I'm sure you will be happy with the finished job.
Scrimp around for a cheaper job and that's what you will get!
Mine charges me £20 and I charge him out at£25 although I supply him 20% of his annual work.
What I don't do is try and get it cheaper when there are big areas m2 to lay.

If your employing him full time £125 a day for a good tradesman is fair.I think if your just employing him at your convenience,then your in a different ball park.

I understand what you're saying but there's no way you'd give what works out at that sort of day rate to a tiler. If you're that worried, Fit them yourself and pay a day for him to grout them?I think if your just employing him at your convenience,then your in a different ball park.

I've bought the tiles/adhesive/grout/self leveller.
His price is just labour only, but it actually comes to more than all the materials I've bought.
If this is the going rate, then fine. It just seems high to me for the number of days it will take when I compare to what I pay to my plumber/electrician/builder/decorator etc.

Is he on a price or day work? If you accept price then time taken should be irrelevant, within reason. Did he say that it would take four days? Perhaps he has somebody else that helps him.
When I get asked how long a job will take I would say a week for example. Doesn't mean I would be doing it myself and I wouldn't say to the customer that other people would be with me.

He works on his own. We discussed how long it would take him as I've had to organise some storage etc. and need to move everything back in.
The two other guys I had to have a look also normally quote on a sqm basis. They are getting back to me over the next day or two.
I had some exterior tiling done last year, but this can't have been on a sqm rate.
