So here's a strange one...

Have had my 2005 facelift V70 for 6 years, from 82,000 to 184,000 and the oil consumption has gone from nothing, to one top-up between services (annual and nearly 18,000 each time), to two, to this time around now needing frequent top ups. It's 15,000 since the last service, and I've been just adding a dollop from a 5 litre container so not an exact figure for miles per whatever.

The strange thing is, no oil stains on the drive, no visible smoke, no apparent deterioration in performance. Talking to friends the other day and one of them said "Check your coolant for oil". Nope, coolant level and colour fine. Also no staining around the end of the exhaust pipe. Maybe a slight worsening of fuel consumption, currently 36-37, but plenty of urban journeys lately and cooler weather so not conclusive.

It's booked in to a Volvo independent for this coming Thursday so well see what they find, in the meantime any ideas for things to check would be welcome.

And I'll update you when we have a diagnosis.

It's not unusual for a car to start consuming more oil at higher mileages. It might not be going to one place through one seal, but a bit more will make it past the piston oil seal and burn that used to, a bit more will make it past the rings and burn etc. a couple of litres per 15K is not going to make any visible blue smoke, and to be honest a lot of brand new cars will happily consume many times that amount.

That said because of the undertray it can be hard to spot genuine leaks, so getting it checked over is not a bad idea.

I'd be checking that your breather system isn't blocked, what oil do you put in it?

Thanks morgrp.

Well the latest update is that the Volvo independent has confirmed no oil leak, car does indeed appear to be running fine. So we agreed to change oil and filter, fill to correct level and monitor going forwards. Only done about 100 miles since, so nothing further to report...

If its a little bit of piston leakage through age and mileage maybe running a slightly thicker oil grade would help - 0w30 is quite thin. In terms of grades, its generally ok to vary it a bit in this country as we don't really see extremes of temperature ( but it can be specific to some cars) - I would think a 5W 30 would be fine in it provided it is a low sulphated ash content (C3 grade or similar) to protect your DPF
