Speeding Question
Discussion
Have only returned to the UK recently after living abroad for the last twenty years and after some clarification. I also apologise in advance if it's been done to death already.
I have received an S172, requesting the details of the driver for a speeding offence (definitely me). The speed was 37 in a 30 zone. My only excuse was I thought it was 40, as there were only a few houses and they were well back from the road but, guilty as charged. I still have a clean driving licence after 37 years, so though I may be offered the speed awareness course but, my Brother in law reckons it's only offered if your within 10% of the limit. I now assume I'll get a £100 fine and 3 points but, if he's wrong how much is it to attend the SAC and is it worth writing a request for one?

Awareness Courses are generally offered for speeds of up to [limit +10% +9mph}, so you're well within that.
Costs vary from area to area but probably average out around the £85-£95 mark.
The absence of any speed limit repeater signs combined with the presence of a system of street lamps would tend to indicate a 30mph limit.

From the list above, is 20 now enforceable then?
20 limits have always been enforceable. The amount of effort police put into actually enforcing them varies from area to area.Until recently ACPO guidelines didn't allow speed awareness courses in 20 limits because if yu speed in a 20 limit you're obviously a baby killing bd with total disregard for the law, and stringing you up by your balls is the only language you'll understand. (I'm paraphrasing slightly, but that seemed to be the gist of it) That seems to be what's changed.

Ok, somehow I thought that the cameras were not calibrated for that low a speed (the fixed ones).
You're probably thinking of Gatsos, which are only type approved for use in speed limits of 30mph or above. They're the exception though - AFAIK no other device has a similar restriction.Sump said:

I genuinely don't find it even possible to do 20 mph. You feel like a right numpty.
Honestly ? You find it impossible to drive at 20mph ?- nods*
Have followed the police several times through such zones and so far, they have ignored the limits, too.
Ended up on the same road last night with a Police car in front of myself but, behind another vehicle. Lead car turned off and police car then sped up and disappeared within seconds. I was sat at 30 (funny old thing) as we still had a couple of hundred yards of the 30 limit left. He must of pushed it to 40+ Obviously, he may have received a call but, no siren or lights. Maybe I'll catch up with him on the SAC if I manage to get one
