We have just had a road resurfaced near us and they have installed a new type of road stud that I haven't seen before. They look a bit like the ones in the image below.

They seem much brighter and seem to work over a wider angle - even without full beams on.

I was thinking how much safer the roads would be (especially unlit ones) if we had proper, efficient road studs. The older type "cats eye" type seem to loose their efficacy over time.

That's when councils don't decide to take them out to make the road "safer" rolleyes

There's some self-illuminating ones out there as well. They're fantastic - you can see the centre line stretching well into the distance, well beyond the distance your dips will cover.

They installed them on a major round-a-bout near Edinburgh. They work in conjunction with the traffic signals and it certainly has improved lane discipline:

I used to take road studs/cat's eyes for granted. Until I drove at night in France, on a motorway that neither had studs nor street lighting. Made me realise how incredibly useful they are and how easy they make following the road in the dark.
