Get a comparison quote for something with a VAG 1.9 TDi PD engine in it. I reckon it'll be a better car overall than the Clio.

You could even try a quote on a 1.9 Alfa 147, but then you'll have to get used to spannering and fussing.

Cheapest I found was around £2000 insurance for the Alfa Romeo 147 1.9, where as Clio was around £1300

Boring and bland 406 2.1td (other half has one she's 23 and it cost her £600 to insure for the year after she just passed her test). Volvo s40 1.9d, Audi a4. The Volvo and the Audi were about 100£ more expensive but I'd personally recommend the s40. Her 406 has done 50k this year and has cost the grand total of £108 to pass its mot. Friend owns an s40 he's had for just over a year and all he's had to change is an arb link.

Also though it was 10 years ago I found it cheaper to insure a 1.8 golf than a 1.0 polo so don't just think on engine size you'd be surprised smile

£2500 budget, anyone's opinion on 1.8 Focus TDCI 2004+

Either that or a Grande Punto 1.9 Multijet

I've had a 2003 Focus 1.8 TDCi for the last 11 years, hasn't put a foot wrong in 123,000 miles.
Also consider the 130bhp Seat Ibiza TDi from the same era, a genuinely quick little hatch.

I've heard some bad things about the punto

I have been looking for the 1.8 tdci focus titanium, they're very nice but not too easy to get a decent one for the price range

Fiat multijet suffers egr valve coke ups, not that unusual in any tdi, but the lack of low grunt when it happens is a pain. Grande Punto is a bit wishy washy in the corners and feels a lot bigger than it is which doesn't inspire confidence the Sporting version may be better round the corners but I doubt it's that much better feeling, just harder and slightly wider tyres. I wouldn't buy a 1.9 GP despite the good looks and frugal nature of the beast, 1.4Tj suits the GP better.

1.8 Focus is a bigger car, has an award winning chassis yada yada yada. I'm not all that keen on the Focus but I'm sure it's competent.

Thank you, however the problem with me getting the 1.4TJ is that I do around 15-20k miles a year, will need a diesel
