Spotify with Squeezeboxes
Discussion
You need to have Logitech Media Server running and install Triodes 3rd party Spotify plugin, but yes you can.
Only the Touch and Radio can use the official applet without a server running.
The easiest way to get LMS running would be to install it on your PC but there's several options if you wanted an independent device with lower power consumption and no need to turn your PC on.

Your use of squeeze centre makes me think you might have a very old version of the server. Its now called LMS and is up to ver 7.7.4 officially or either 7.8 or 7.9 for the community supported versions which are excellent.
If you're on an earlier version try updating to 7.7.4 and try looking again.

I've been running 7.3.3.
Have just tried upgrading to 7.8.1 (and also 7.7.4, and back to 7.3.3) but I get an error on trying to start the service:
0003: The following modules failed to load: YAML::XS
0002: [14-11-15 08:48:43 ] ssctrl Command line = /volume1/SqueezeCenter/slimserver.pl --daemon --pidfile /volume1/SqueezeCenter/Cache/squeezecenter.pid --cachedir /volume1/SqueezeCenter/Cache --logdir /volume1/SqueezeCenter/Logs --prefsdir /volume1/SqueezeCenter/prefs --noupnp --user ssods --group everyone --httpport 9001
0001: [14-11-15 08:48:21 ] ssctrl Starting SqueezeCenter 7.8.1-1415964505.
It's running on a QNAP TS219. I've updated the firmware on the NAS and tried again, and get the same.
Any thoughts?

No sorry, I'm not that familiar with LMS on a NAS apart from one aborted attempt to install it on my crappy Buffalo NAS which didn't go well.

Just to close this off in case anyone else gets the same, the correct way to upgrade is:
- remove SSODS from the App page in QNAP Admin console
- download and install the Media Server 7.7.2 QPKG through the Apps page (this gives latest SSODS version)
- install any later version throught the SSODS page
- rescan the music library and re-create any favourites
I'm now running 7.8.1, and it seems to work fine.
