My 14 year old sons christmas list consists of a bunch of Iron Maiden LPs and a record player!

I was surprised to say the least...

Anyway, it's probably a fad but dont want to let him down.. What can I get that'll be half decent so he can play the things?

I was thinking a cheap amp and turntable and some half decent headphones? Maybe a couple of small speakers too?

Want to try and keep it below £200 if possible.. but dont want to get some cheap cack all in one thing (a decent quality all in one would do fine)..

Any ideas?

Cheers

Dave

I'd be having a wander down to your nearest Richer Sounds.

Bit over budget at £260. You'll need an interconnect and a bit of speaker cable and ideally some speaker stands, and a rack and a...hehe

This will do I am sure and is within budget....

or

http://www.hifi-tower.co.uk/Auna-Hifi-Stereo-Vinyl...

A this stage you do not want to be buying a turntable, amp and speakers separately....that will cost hundreds.

Get a 5.1 system, receiver, then the LP player to go with it. Connect it all to the TV.

Please no !! Whilst so many of us started with this sort of stuff (OK for me a second hand radiogram) it soon proves to be a waste of money as it sounds truely c**P

If he is serious about going the Vinyl route then go second hand on e-bay. Dual CS505 is a great starter deck and can be had for about £30, amp for a bit more and speakers sell at a huge discount to new. Less outlay, much better sound smile

Sounds like a disaster, he'll be wanting to listen to "The Maiden" whilst I'm trying to watch NCIS! smile

Thanks for the suggestions, the Richer Sounds stuff is pretty much what I was thinking, throw in a decent set of headphones to take it to about £300, should do the trick.

Most 5.1 receivers don't have a phono input so you may need a pre amp if you go that route.

Id get second hand seperates, im a fan of Marantz but similar quality brands should be available within your budget.

You just need to be careful its a reputable seller.

ETA - just had a quick look and from what im reading an SL series technics turntable might be a good option, while not sounding awesome they are good general purpose decks and are build well due to being primarily for DJing.

Second hand may be the route, had a good chat with a nice chap in richer sounds today, he was really honest and basically said the setup I was thinking of (cheapest of each) will work fine but ultimately a poor setup, a bit more 450-ish gets something quite good, but that may be a bit much.

More thought required.

Get second hand stuff. Ebay has loads, and something like an old Creek amp, and there are some decent 2nd hand turntables (Rega, Dual, moth)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MOTH-BADGED-REGA-P2-PLAN...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CREEK-CAS4040-AMPLIFIER-...

If you need speakers,

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wharfedale-Diamond-9-1-S...

I may have some old Castle Durham speakers going cheap (in the shed, and may not have survived) if you are interested.

(Must get my turntable set up again......)

One thing to note re: the richer sounds stuff, is that the link is for a pre-amp. Not an amp. It won't power speakers, but will only boost the turn table signal.

A separate amp will be required on top of that.

Yup, that's pretty much the conversation I had with the very nice chap in richer sounds.

They did have some stuff with built in pre amp but it was mostly cack, so next step was upgrade both turntable and amp to include all the right bits, at which point I made my excuses and legged it, it was getting pricey for what is probably a fad!

Ultimately I found a nice looking Phillips all in one thing, plays via internal speakers or streams to Bluetooth which was nice.

Looks the business (it's probably naff, but was £120 so I'm not grumbling) got it from class ohlson of all places.

Thanks again for all the help chaps!

Not sure how it will sound but looks like a bit of a bargain to me, Bluetooth speakers for smartphones aren't far of that price, might be worth giving it a try before Christmas though, you know for science, not many reviews on the internet for it either.

Im curious to hear what it sounds like.

Is it any good? I've got tons of old vinyl and nothing to play them on so I'd be interested in a first-hand review!
