If we regard 20 yr olds doing 80 in a twisty wet 50mph, with temperatures close to freezing, and then driving so close to the car in front that their lights couldn't be seen in the rear view mirror as having anything at all to say about the quality of someone else's driving.

Or maybe my lack of a similar encounter is anecdotal evidence that knobheadedry of this kind is somewhat rare.

At no point did I advise 80mph in the conditions you describe, I just think the lowering of speed limits from 60 to 50 was pointless. I felt perfectly safe on these roads at 60, a little sign will not overrule my common sense and judgement.

If there is a car behind you, the driver of which can see you, do you really need rear fog lights lit?

At least two drivers thought you did not!

They dazzle!
This, this, this. Rear fogs are hardly ever really needed but you get the mongs who turn them on when it's slight misty and driving in nose to tail traffic. Stop it, your are burning my retinas!!

People who are unable to stay in their lane on a roundabout
People who are unable to accelerate to the correct speed on slip roads. If I can manage 70mph in my underpowered VW Golf, so can you
People who have their fog lights on when it's not foggy
People who are incapable of leaving the middle lane on the motorway
People who cannot maintain a constant speed
People who brake for no reason
People who tailgate
People who are doing anything other than driving (texting, having an argument, making a call, whatever - concentrate on driving instead please)
People who block junctions when in a traffic jam
People who hesitate at junctions/roundabouts
People who are unable to perform a hill start without rolling backwards
People who can't park properly or quickly
People who open their doors onto other cars
People who don't indicate
People who slow down too much for speed cameras
People who don't have their lights on in poor visibility conditions
People who get in the wrong lane and decide to make a dangerous lane-change instead of re-routing their journey slightly
People who can't get from one set of lights to another fast enough for them both to stay green
People who don't move over enough when there are parked cars, forcing me to almost mount the kerb
People who don't move over to let me out of a junction onto a dual-carriageway ring road
People who use the wrong lane because they're afraid to merge at the correct part of the slip road, then cut up the people who did it correctly
People who think their Audi A3 is the most important car on the road
People who choose to drive some silly 'SUV' instead of a more useful estate/saloon version
People who are oblivious to the queue of traffic behind their poorly driven vehicle

I think that's it

People who try to drive faster than they can plan. You know the type that end up making pathetically slow progress as they attempt to push through traffic faster than their brain can process their surroundings: getting stuck behind cars turning right, having to emergency stop at roundabouts with good visibility, creating road blocks when passing parked cars because of a refusal to alter speed/give way and flying up to give way signs forcing the traffic on the main road to slow down are just a few examples. These clowns are by far the most irritating and dangerous at the same time.

People who don't look ahead at traffic , the types who can see a car coming up behind a truck and will be pulling out to pass, but don't adjust their speed accordingly resulting in said car indicating to come out and having to slam on the brakes whilst the half wit screams past.

How drivers give signals, can be a useful way of checking how `on the ball' a driver is, in the same way that, high performance F1 / rally drivers / snooker players etc are working out what they will be doing, several corners / moves before they get there.
If a driver gives a signal in good time before they make a particular manoeuvre, everyone around them on the road including pedestrians, can adjust (often subconsciously) what they are doing to accommodate that manoeuvre.
Giving a signal too early can certainly be a bit of a pain, but is infinitely better than giving a late signal.
As for those who don't give signals, when there are other road users around them, they are the motoring equivalent of someone who cant walk and chew gum at the same time. They should be regarded as sub catatonic morons and best kept well away from, where possible.

must be that time of year....

i must have seen at least 1 car every day for the last week with a headlight bulb out!
Its dark, get it fixed!!

I sort of blame the EU legislators for making cars so safe that its impossible to change a bulb without a 12 year old, 2 skins knuckles and a full front end rebuild!

A car went past me this morning with the DRL's on, but nothing else. Couldn't see it from behind in the lack of light and foggy weather conditions. Totally stupid!

Had a good couple of silly driving examples on the way home last night. First was a car that nearly slowed to a stop on roundabouts that were clear. Second was an Audi that whilst travelling along a 60 mph A road, kept braking randomly. The odd thing was that it flew past me on a dual carriageway, but then kept braking every 100 metres or so, then speeding up. Odd behaviour.

There's cross purposes in some of this conversation, and I was a bit pissed off by the tailgating last night.

However, use your judgement and do 60 in those 50's when you can, that's up to you. I'll exercise different judgement, with other concerns foremost, and do 53ish. Other's will do 50, because that's the limit. That isn't a bad driving trait.

I'd far rather be behind someone doing 45mph in that 50, who slows to 40mph for the next 40 bit, than be behind someone doing 40 in 50, who then speeds up because the 40mph bit is actually two lane dual carriageway for a brief period. That's frequent and frustrating because the police sit there quite often, so I likely won't be able to overtake them, and then I'll be sat behind them again doing 40 in the NSL section after that.

Conditions bad enough for fog lights but you were overtaken? Was this on a d/c or motorway?

Loads of people had fog lights on yesterday when the visibility was perfectly fine, I overtook a few on the Mway yesterday and flashed my fog lights too many people use them when visibilty is not bad enough

Highway code says this:

226

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236). Law RVLR regs 25 & 27

236

You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

Most of the time yesterday foglights on the rear were dazzling and obsuring brake lights.

If I have mine on a car comes up behind me, I turn them off so as not to dazzle.

I think if you were being flashed you probably had them on unnecessarily

Fog lights are specifically to be used when visibility drops below 100 metres. Any more than that they are a nuisance and dazzle the drivers behind. So if its was heavy mist and you could see at least 1/4 mile on front of you, DON'T USE THEM!

People who either never indicate OR seem to indicate incorrectly (eg: constantly indicating left while going around a round about).

Middle lane hoggers

People who just cant use common sense to work out lane positioning (route home has left lane for a dual carriageway and the right lane to continue round to M25 etc). People see to get in the left hand land until the last moment and cut across all the people joining the dual carriageway. I often see it (and beep them) to usually get a beep back in return...eh?! Your the tw@t in the completely wrong lane!

People who use the wrong lane just to try and skip a little que of traffic, they then just try and push in at the last second...and I'll try block them every time.

People who when in a que of traffic leave a HUGE gap between them and the car in front. Just keep up with the flow and help all cars move along... Not only that but when there is more than one lane it just fills up with people pushing in

I just thought I'd share my experience from last week. I approached roundabout near the RVI hospital in Newcastle. Traffic was busy being a city centre near Xmas at rush hour. There was a stream of cars approaching from my right so I waited patiently indicating right. Four cars in a row to my right, all turned left and none of them indicated. I basically sat parked up with a cue of traffic behind me all waiting to use the roundabout when I could have been out. Not the best way to ease conjection.

I jut don't get the mentality of someone approaching a roundabout and SEEING other traffic waiting to give way to them, to decide not to indicate.

Rubbish rant but it really did grind my gears, got my goat, irked me beyond reason, etc.

I understand your pessimism but here's why I believe it to be the case.

Before about 1980 you rarely saw a car mount the pavement except where absolutely unavoidable.

Since the widespread introductiojn of alloy weheels it has become commonplace.
Cars are a lot wider now. If you ever see a car from the 70s or earlier on the road it looks tiny. If I parallel park mine level to the right hand side of a modern car it looks like I have abandoned it.
