We usually buy our wine by looking at what's on special offer at the local supermarkets and grabbing a couple of bottles. Now, I'm no connoisseur but I've a sneaking suspicion I'm missing out on some of the best of what wine has to offer by doing this smile I don't want to spend fortunes but thought joining a wine club may be a good way of expanding my palate. So are the wine clubs any good, do they offer any advantage to just picking some different bottles off the shelf, any recommendations for a club in particular??

Thanks

I'm a member of Naked Wines, gets mixed reviews on here, but I've generally enjoy´d everything I've ordered from them.

They do a couple of very nice Sauvignon Blancs and Malbecs... I've also heard reasonable things about Virgin Wines too.

All depends on personal taste.

I would strongly recommend Hourlier Wines (www.hourlierwines.co.uk) for high quality French wine that's not avaliable in the mainstream. Really knowledgeable and not expensive.

Hope that helps

the old man orders from Naked Wines, I certainly have no complaints regarding the product (reds only) I have tried.

I usually try to liberate a bottle when I visit.

Another fan of Naked wines here. Never had a bad bottle and they will refund/replace any that you don't like anyway.
Good customer service, speedy delivery.

Also I put £20 a month in and then forget about it. When I remember I have £100 and that's a free case of wine!

Virgin wines and can't fault it they do a wine bank save £10 a month and every 3 months they give you £10 interest I put £20 a month in and it soon builds up. Superb customer service as well I had one crate break which they sorted the next day and I didn't like a couple of bottles after drinking most of it they changed it for another no questions asked.

...and unlike most of the other clubs, Wine Society sells product from recognised producers: you can price compare which you can't do with the likes of Virgin/Naked when they do their usual "we liked it so much that we bought the lot".

We use Naked & Virgin wines (naked is a spin off by ex Virgin guy) and get the occasional gift case from Wine Society. They're all very good and couldn't say anything bad about any of them.

Buying en primeur as long as you can store it.
Value:
Chateau Beaumont Medoc - consistent good value. Bought a case almost every year.
Top of the (my!) range:
Forts de Latour Pauillac - enormous, longest finish of any wine ever (am I boring you yet?). Outside my budget these days. Still got some from when it was cheaper (or I felt more flush smile ). A 2001 will be on the Christmas dinner table,

regards,
Jet

I use Naked Wines and they are all quite drinkable.

There is also a £60 off offer at the mo so you get 13 bottles and 2 glasses for £45.

Another Wine Society member - very happy. Have tried a few of the others in the past, but WS is consistently good value for money.
