Hi all,

I have only owned my car for a few months and generally not driven it at all in temps below 10 degrees. I drove round for about 10 miles this morning, temp on the gauge was about 100 so I thought I would stick my foot down in 3rd. I got to about 6K RPM and it felt like the rev limited cut in. Visions of what the hell have I done went through my mind.

Is there something such as a cold engine sensor that stops you damaging the engine as I just had not given it time to warm up properly (fingers crossed)

I'm not aware of any such rev limiter and it's certainly never happened in mine. If the oil temperature lights have all gone out then that indicates that it's safe to boot the arse out of it. Are you just going by the coolant temperature? In any event I would've thought that after 10 miles the oil and engine would have been been sufficiently warmed up for you not to have damaged anything.

Hi, yeah I don't think anything to do with the cold now. I took it out for an additional 30+ miles, starting off with some high speed dual carriage way to get it warmed up. Problem happened again, but not consistently. By the time I had finished it seemed to have stopped happening, but still worried something isn't quite right.

Everything is fine up to that point, no strange noises or anything like that. It feels exactly like the rev limiter, but if you keep your foot down, after the jerkiness it does keep on pulling up to around 7.5K where I change up. No warning lights on the dash.

Anyone any other ideas what this could be?

Sounds electrical or ignition based.

Could be coil pack on its way, MAF sensor about to let go etc.

OP i do believe when certain parameters are not met the engine has a lowered soft cut rev limit.

Interesting, boringly I've been been driving cars with the S54 engine for 10 years now and have never been aware of that. Do you know what the parameters are?

Not a BMW but on my car if the oil is low then the revs are limited, even when warm.

May or may not be relevant to your case but I had a brief period with my Z4M where it would hesitate to rev up through 5-6K on full throttle, which felt like a soft limit cutting in for a moment. I cured it with a couple applications of fuel line cleaner (fuel additive), the first tank initially made it worse and the second cleared it up completely.

My SMG e46 M3 wouldn't rev past 6k when it was stationary with the bonnet up.

I would advise not using the cold start Rev lights as your guide to how much you can Rev the car from cold as they go out far too early.

I don't Rev my z4mc past 3k until the oil temp is up to full operating temps, at about 90 degrees.

What fuel are you running on Op? High octane? Mine seems to like Shell Nitro

Hi, sorry for delay in responding but busy week at work and not driven the car. I use Shell 97. The temp was definitely up to where it should be. TBH I only noticed the rev counter lights actually change recently as just always let it warm up smile Going to go out later tonight and see if the problem has magically gone.

This. You can actually modify the values that dictate when the swarm up lights go out using a cable and the correct software. My M3 lights go out when the car's oil is at ~80c.

I would also suggest V-Power fuel or other 99 octane stuff.
