Don't DIY this. Good SEO companies know SEO inside and out and how it affects your site and what other issues you have that may be affecting it. Use (good) specialists for quality work.
This.

The guy's an electrician. Without being funny he'll not be the best person to do techy web related stuff. Like I'm not ever gong to rewire my house.

Problem with tax? See an accountant.
Problem with a lease? See a lawyer.
Problem with rankings? Seen a SEO guy.

Notwithstanding the fact a professional will do a better job, it'll be cheaper in the long run as well. A spark makes money running cables. Spending time faffing about reading books and trying to figure out SEO takes him away from making money. If he spends 20 hours on SEO and gets nowhere fast he could have done a rewire and made a couple of grand (or whatever). Which would pay for his SEO.
Absolutely this.

I sold online advertising and SEO for 8 years and 95% of sites could be improved in more than one way, yielding better results. I would recommend a blend of SEO optimisation and some PPC. SEO can take time to have tangible results whereas PPC is measurable, easily-tweaked and measurable.

Can you really get SEO worth having for £500 and if so I guess it has to be a one man band ?

I think you could get something for that money, perhaps a couple of hours with a half-decent freelancer, but not a lot more if you want real experience and expertise.

Are there fewer pages on your new site?
Have the pages been correctly optimised?
301 redirects have been done.
The new site has more-or-less the same number of pages as the old site.
The site has been built using the "Moboom" platform which we were told is designed to ensure pages are correctly optimised for the device they're being viewed on. However, as the iPad screenshot above shows, this clearly isn't working as it should.

Thanks to information on this thread (and another in the PH Business section) we've now gone up the rankings from where we were previously now that the changes have been implemented.

Thanks everyone.

Excellent, glad we could help. Was there one thing that made the difference or a combo of them?

Hard to say really as we got him to do them all at once. 24hrs later there was a dramatic improvement.

There's a company in Glasgow we recommend. The main guy is sound and gives a fair and free appraisal of a site and its workings. His clients go from trades to national chains to universities so he knows what he's about.

If you want I can let him know you're looking for advice.
Could you pass on his details mate ?

James I have my own digital team within my organisation they handle all the SEO and digital marketing if you would like some help give us a shout. Worked out cheaper for me to just set up my own team up than to outsource to a agency if you need any help I can get them to walk you through it.

Best mate at unit did SEO for his dissertation. Can pass his details on if needed. I trust him implicitly.
