yep, and he's right and wrong in the same time.
in the straight line untill the 120mph line the tuscan S will be the better car but above that and handling wise the porker beats the tuscan with a mile
Cheers - I'm thinking on a track rather than the mythical B road blast or traffic light grand prix and I can't find too many lap time comparisons...I would expect the Porker to be quicker, but not quick enough to warrant 'muller'...in the straight line untill the 120mph line the tuscan S will be the better car but above that and handling wise the porker beats the tuscan with a mile
How about TopGear lap times?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Top_Gear_test...
TVR Tuscan MKII (No S specified) - 1:24.8
911 Turbo (Probably 997 given the series) - 1:22.2
So 911 Turbo 3% quicker over a lap in 997 form. Considerable, but not overwhelming.
Look further down and the 996 Turbo did 1:31 over a wet lap. Wonder how the Tuscan would fare in the same conditions...

In Sport Auto the MkII Tuscan gave the contemporary 911 Targa a pretty comprehensive pasting in just about every dynamic aspect including Hockenheim (short track) lap time. It's just that the (any) TVR will take a fair bit more skill and determination to get close to its ultimate capability out of it, than the Porsche (which is part of the appeal, I'd say).

I've owned a Tuscan mk3 S and a 997 Turbo and your mate on bookface is spot on. The Turbo was not just quicker than the Tuscan, but also most other things on the road. Although very capable and very very quick was a bit too clinical (well for me anyway).
Cheers - he's talking about the 996 but I'm guessing much the same applies?aerospoke said:
The Tuscan2 in Sportauto was not exactly stock. Afaik it was running a KW-suspension and sticky tyres.
But then, this has a long tradition at TVR. ;-)
Cheers Jens
I think the German importers said at the time that this was poppycock & that the car was the same as all (three? ) TVRs delivered in Germany which basically meant just a proper alignment and better brake pads. But then, this has a long tradition at TVR. ;-)
Cheers Jens
Not sure whether I'd choose KW over the OE Bilstein/Eibach set up either. When, than at least go for Intrax/Ohlins...

Whats interesting is that the 996 turbo "only" has 284 bhp per ton.
A standard Tuscan is 327 bhp per a ton assuming 360 bhp and 1100kg, a modified speed six with 420bhp is about 380bhp/ton. The 4.3/4.5 and FFF cars should be much closer.
That's what I was kind of thinking...the power to weight of an 'S' is better than the Turbo... A standard Tuscan is 327 bhp per a ton assuming 360 bhp and 1100kg, a modified speed six with 420bhp is about 380bhp/ton. The 4.3/4.5 and FFF cars should be much closer.

They're 4wd though with plenty of electronic trickery going on.Performance stats here:
0 - 60 3.6 (x50)

That's an X50 though. He was referring to a standard Turbo. Torquestats shows the 'S' quicker to 100 and quicker 60-100 so not seeing the 'mullered' in his comment...probably just being hyper defensive about the new toy Performance stats here:

I've a mk1 4L Tusc and my mate has a 996 turbo. We've done many a euro trip together and in real world driving there's nothing between them. On autobahns or alpine passes neither of us were ever able to pull away from the other by any significant amount. The only difference was, that by the end of a day in the Alps he'd still be serenely wafting along with fingertip control whereas I'd feel like I'd been wrestling an alligator with my hair on fire. There's no denying the Porsche is a ruthlessly efficient way to get from A to B but the TVR makes the journey a bit more special.
A friend of mine has a 996 turbo which has been remapped etc and it goes like a scaulded cat...but i havent been out on a drive in the tuscan when he has had the turbo out so will be interested to see. I would expect his turbo to be faster but nowhere near the sense of occasion the Tuscan has but an amazing piece of kit in its own right.
We just got my wife a Cayenne turbo and that thing is just bizzare...it is SO fast for a 4x4 its almost not real! I would strugle to keep up with her if she booted it! Perfectly sensible for a runaround car i thought...

I've owned a couple of 911s, driven a couple of Turbos, as well as driven a few TVRs.
I always felt the TVRs looked and felt more special than the Porsches, but I also felt the Porsches were much quicker than their numbers suggested and the TVRs much slower. I have yet to get out of a TVR going "Jesus that was fast", but this is more likely I have yet to be in one going full whack rather than them actually being slow.
Living out in the middle of nowhere, we have great roads but they are also flanked by farms. Say what you will about TVR's "masculine" approach to safety features, etc etc.... I always found it nice to know I had AWD and TC in the Porsche if I came round a corner and a local farmer had turned it into a swamp.

I was watching the Auto Express race the runway and although their not racing together the times are as follows.
