Diesel knocking following cam belt change?
Discussion
Hi all,
My daily driver is a 2010 Vauxhall Astravan Sport with the 1.7 CDTi engine.
It reached 65k miles so I decided to have a full service and the cambelt changed by a reputable local garage (independent).
When I went to collect it, it knocked quite noticeably for a few seconds after it started then quietened down which I thought was odd.
I have now noticed it every time I start it from stone cold. It knocks for about 5-10 seconds then goes quiet.
I asked a mate of mine who knows more about diesel motors than me and he thinks it is 'diesel knock' caused by the timing being slightly out?
He reckons the garage have fitted the cam belt wrongly and maybe jumped a tooth causing the engine to knock when cold but less when it gets warmer.
He went on to say that the incorrect timing will be causing it to be slightly down on power and using more fuel?
Can anyone offer a second opinion before I attempt to speak to the garage who will no doubt attempt to fob me off because I'm guessing they probably won't want to re-do the whole cambelt fitting!

Is it down on power? does it smoke a lot from cold?
It could be the glow plugs were disconected and non reconnected, or as you think the pump may be 1 tooth out.
If these have a cam sensor check it's connected (if it's not there should be a fault code for it (if that is it has one?).
Thanks for the reply. It could be the glow plugs were disconected and non reconnected, or as you think the pump may be 1 tooth out.

To be honest, it's always ran fairly clean and I've never noticed much smoke at all, even under hard acceleration. I haven't noticed an increase in smoke after the belt change.
It's always been fairly gutless so can't really say it feels slower!
I'll try to get it plugged in and see if there are any fault codes.

they do have a cam sensor and are common rail.It could be the glow plugs were disconected and non reconnected, or as you think the pump may be 1 tooth out.

So in theory the pump position shouldnt matter, although it does have a locator, as does the cam pulley.
Really...these engines are a doddle to do the belt on, it should be almost impossible to get it wrong.
But it could happen.
Not sure how the cam out a tooth would affect running though, but I guess it is a possibility.
Either way if it's doing something different now than it did before, it needs checked.
