Fitting a HD cctv system, and i am trying to put a picture on my TV's through the VGA output via the loft amp.
The HDMi output is feeding the monitor by the way, and the DVR recorder doesn't have a BNC output.
Bought good quality VGA - BNC converter lead so i can put the vga output up a coax to the loft.

Trouble is i cant get a picture out of it, put a test monitor on the end of the VGA converter and just got squiggly lines.
Am i missing something?
I assumed VGA is a analogue signal.
Cheers

You will need an RF modulator with either a phono type input (yellow) or a scart input with a vga to scart adaptor

You will then need to set the RF output channel onto a frequency where there are no TV signals

Are you sure your DVR does not have a composite video out (yellow phono)? Which VGA-BNC lead do you have, you cannot usually convert VGA to composite video with a single BNC cable, you need a scan convertor. Some thing like this, although I've never used this one.

As already mentioned, you'll then need an RF modulator to get your composite video into the loft amp

You could also use a VGA over CAT5 extender, and send the VGA signal across CAT5 ethernet cable (unless you don't want to run another cable..).

This one does audio as well, but shop around, they can be had for less - however not all support audio as well.

I can't see how VGA can be sent across standard coax (RG8 / RG8u?) without some kind of special adapter.

I presume you bought something like this?

I had assumed (wrongly) the VGA - BNC conversion lead would put a picture into a coax.

The cctv system has a HDMi output for the monitor and just a VGA monitor output, no BNC output.
I have fitted a TV modulator in the loft and has a coax running to it from the cctv, approx 20M run.

It looks like i will need to convert the VGA signal to a composite (coax) signal before it goes into the TV modulator.

Does this sound right ?
Also, am i likely to lose much signal going through a VGA and then a TV modulator?

Running in a cat 5 is not an easy option as the house is pre wired (not by me) and difficult to route cables, but i'm open to suggestions.
Cheers

Obviously the modulated picture will not be as clear as the HDMI, plus you're adding in a scan convertor which will degrade the VGA picture. Setting the right RF channel is important, you need to find a clear channel away from TV reception and mobile phones (4G). Enter your postcode here to check your local TV transmition channels, tick detailed view http://www.digitaluk.co.uk

How are you getting the modulated signal into your loft amp? Do you already have an aerial going in? How are you combining the two signals as this will affect the signal?

It sounds like you want something like this VGA to composite converter so you can feed the VGA output of your box into this, and then this will feed the coax cable.

ETA: This one is the same thing but better illustrated and you'll also need a phono to BNC converter.

Im using a standard cctv modulator which accepts a BNC / coax input from cctv output, which then tee's into the cable between the aerial and loft amp, have used these before and work well.

Yes that's what i have in mind, how well they work and what kind of picture i will get one the signal has gone through this VGA/composite converter and then into the loft mounted modulator, i dont know.
Might have to buy one and see what happens.
