Well I got her up on the ramp tonight to find this

And this is only the visible part frown

So tonight's question is this, who do you recommended to carry out outrigger replacement or possibly a full chassis refurbishment ?

Please keep in mind that I live in Edinburgh so the closer the better but quality of work and value for money will also count to my final decision.

I guess your nearest specialist is HHC.

Steve Darvill at SD Autotec near Boroughbridge does good chassis work. This is mine from last year. He is reasonably priced too.

That's a very impressive rebuild. If you don't mind me asking what was your total bill at the end of it ?
Ideally this is what I'd like to do to mine but obviously it's down to budget.

I'm sure it'll scare the hell out of me also but if I get the chassis fully refurbished and a few other issues dealt with my car will feel brand new and will last for many years to come.

From memory, the chassis came to about £4k. It was all the incidentals such as diff refurb, new wishbones, brakes etc. on top of this that added up. The engine cost the most as it was in such a mess. The total bill was £11k. A new chassis is £4k plus VAT plus labour so it still worked out cheaper to refurbish mine.

yikes not quite sure the budget stretches that far. I really wish it did but it might have to be spread out and done over time.
Hmmm, possibly back to just chassis now and do the rest myself in time.

Thanks Trevor smile I'll give the guys a phone tomorrow anyway and see what they say.

The engine cost well over 50% of the bill. Steve did have a set price for full body lift and outriggers for about £1500 with the chassis painted (as opposed to powder coat) assuming nothing else needs doing so he may well be worth a call.

Hi,

Sandy at Wallace's garage outside Kilmarnock did mine during the summer. It might be worth giving him a call.

Trevors figures look spot on. If you can't get the engine and gear box out and body lift you cannot be 100% certain that you have a completely intact chassis free from nastiesfrown

The above package is an unbelievable good price. I have never used them so cannot vouch for their work, But maybe it might be worth chatting to guys who use centrals for their cars before you make any commitments?

Thanks everyone smile
A lot of research and phoning to do but I've now got a plan to go forward with.
Body off outriggers done and if required full chassis restoration.
Gearbox, diff and shafts out and re-seal/rebuild them. A little leaky when I was underneath.
New discs and pads for all round.
Upgrade the suspension too.
Already got a price for roof and interior restoration.
I'm sure this list will grow in time but this is a start.

Not going to be cheap project but if I get it done right it'll be a car to enjoy for many years to come.

Plus 1, that looks really good, even if you do a body off restoration yourself, you'll still pay about £4k for a spray job, re-trim over £3k (from memory) which will total over £7k, and for the extra £3K you get a new chassis and all the work done for you. If the quality of workmanship is as good as the companies in the old factory it is a no brainer!

Has anyone had or seen work from Central before to comment?

Had a couple of small jobs done there (including tricky exhaust manifold gaskets), happy with the work.

It can be easy and either necessary or very tempting to spend more that the original refurb cost quoted though. How about all new bushes on the rebuild? And new suspension while it's apart? Brake and fuel lines? Good chance at least some of those will need doing as well when it gets stripped.

Very true, but it does say ancillaries included, no idea what that includes, perhaps bushes etc? Who knows…… I think other costs would include gearbox / diff refurb while out, service / paint the driveshafts, propshaft and it would be rather rude just to put the engine back in without doing something to it…….

I reckon if you struck a price with them it would be too tempting for them to turn away, especially if you paid a good amount upfront, without leaving yourself open as it were.
