Has there ever been a thread like this where the OP purchased something someone suggested?

Has anyone mentioned a 1*2 yet?

Cos that would be what id suggest.

On account of them being excellent little cars

I think the v8 would be abit of overkill and im sure insurance would be insane!

The 182 seems to be the best bet, with the st a close second,
What models with as standard kit should i be looking for??
As ive found a standard 182, cup 182 and trophy 182
Whats the pros and cons?

I hadnt really thought about honda civics mainly because surely at that price they would of been trashed around abit?

Also i have to think about insurance, ive been chatting to classic car insurance specialist and they seem the cheapest, if i found a car that was suitable from 20years ago!

What kinda prices have people got on hot hatches at 23years old?

Only you can know how much the insurance will be - get a quote online. It could be anything from £200-£2000 depending on so many factors.

Re the 1*2

They can be a wee bit expensive to fix if they break - theyre robust though so no major worries

Belt changes are vital and expensive - £500

They can be a little rough on front suspension components and the electrics can be niggly if youre unlucky - nothing terminal though

That's it really.

Trophy is a bit marmite imo. The seats and suspension are the only special bits. Seats I can take or leave - the standard pleather rs seats are lovely , the trophy suspension is great but only if maintained and thats not cheap.

Fuel/tax/regular servicing is all cheap, insurance isnt bad considering all the fun and modding for more power is so expensive you wont bother

Conventional wisdom says buy a fully equipped and cup packed 182 (full fat) - id have another one in a heartbeat

Dear Stedaley
Hang on a sec...
Has anyone had a quiet word in your ear that Clio's and Fiestas are shopping utility vehicles for girls... regardless of the ST, Cup or Trophy sticker? ..Civics are for the retired. As you're 23 I do appreciate it is difficult insurance wise.. So I'm going to suggest low powered but better engineered and more importantly, safer kit...
Have you considered:
1. BMW 318i Coupe
2. Alfa Romeo 156
3. Alfa Romeo 147
4. Lexus IS 200
5. Audi A3/A4

And you will soon learn v8 is the way to go... but that is for later on.

Cheers
A

Re the 182...

You have the standard 182. Then you get the 182 Cup, then the Trophy. The one to get is the standard 182 with both Cup packs. That way you get the leather / climate control / xenon's as well as the splitter / spoiler and the Cup suspension.

Cup packed 182's have anthracite wheels... Usually.

Don't discount a silly low mileage 172 at this budget. There's a 1 lady owner, FSH 172 for sale with 34k miles on it for just over your budget. I was tempted by it myself!

Personally Id take CTR, impreza or 330ci over any clio other than the v6. Clios are for kids and girls.

It has to be practical too! Im just not sure a v8 or a bigger bmw would be? Insurance would be more? Petty would be considerably more, and aurely fixing would be if anything went wrong??

I hadnt thought of any of them if im honest, i shall have a look into them now!!

You can buy my car off me for £2950 + a bacon sandwich.

Might as well end the thread now...

I'm only 24 and tbh you would be surprised what you can insure reasonbaly at our age providing you have some decent NCB and don't live in Birmingham. Already scratched the V8 itch (E39 540) at 21 which was great but I have to say once you've owned a "proper" car you wont want to go back to Clios/Fiestas etc (except for when you are borrowing your girlfriends, in which case you will appreciate them for the laugh they can be!).

Regarding the alfa which i hadnt even thought of, why are they so cheap? I have heard they are renowned for breaking down, but at that price, a 147 a 1300quid, with 37000 miles?

Also im not a big lexus fan so again hadnt looked, but anything i should be looking out for?

They're all wafters, and no hatchbacks so not very practical if that's what you wanted, the IS 250 doesn't even have folding rear seats.

Otherwise you'll be able to pick up an LS 400 for a song if you want a V8.

I think hot hatch is the way to go with it, maybe tempted to go a little bigger in terms of size, just finding one which is the an all rounder.

Peug 205? Clio 182/172 fiesta st, polo gti? All have the hot hatch pedigree,

If i could id go for the new fiesta ecoboost, but id rather buy the car outright

No, never. They always end up buying what they really wanted in the first place before they even asked on here, usually something dull or sensible (depending on how you look at it) rather than the ridiculous suggestions offered on PH.

From what I know you can only get 'classic insurance' if you already have a 'daily' driver.
