And as I understand it, brawling outside of the sport can see you banned from competition?I’ve lived outside the UK for more than a decade now but what’s wrong with flying your countries flag, driving a transit or posting a picture of someone else who does those things? It would have been polite to have a chat before hanging the flags or taking the photo but hardly something to resign over.
Shaven head, patriotic, likes a drink with friends in the garden, doesn’t waste much time on driveway maintenance, loves a heated argument etc…this could be me. A person wouldn’t be disqualified from the working class by a career in banking and interests in arts, history and the sciences would they? I just need to be reassured about where I sit in this hierarchy and to make sense of my place in society.
The aspect that really baffles me is where this debate springs from. Only 12-13% of the UKs population where born outside the UK (which is broadly comparable neighbouring Ireland, France, Spain, the Netherlands and much lower than some other developed economies) and of those about half hold UK passports anyway. So the UK is by no means exceptional as a destination of choice. Given the countries Commonwealth ties, the number of English speakers globally, the global cultural influence of the UK and the emergence of London as a global financial centre it’s surprising how low that 12-13% figure is really.

While the right wing media has presented it as a "Sneer at the working class". I don't see it that way because I don't see that image as representative of the 'working class'. I see that as a much bigger leap of intepretation and negative spin given she has been prominently anti-bnp for many years.

Don't forget even the DM and Cameron wanted to reclaim the St Georges flag from the far right a few years ago.
