A good pal of mine turns 50 next week and loves his Jack Daniels. His has all the different types of JD out there. I was considering getting him something a little different but do not have a clue about Bourbons.

Please help

Bulleit and Makers Mark are widely available and pretty good.
Others are more tricky to get hold of.

Woodford reserve is excellent. Polished a bottle off last week.

Ooh! I've not tried it yet, but a friend's recommended Elijah Craig's.

I sell a brand called Hudson (made in New York) which has recently launched in the UK - its excllent and something a little different to the other brands from Kentucky.

George T Stagg and Four Roses Single Barrel are all nice too.

The prob with Bourbon is ready availability. Much of the truly good stuff is hens teeth.

If not in London, and nowhere near a speciality retailer , then perhaps a local Waitrose may help. They are stocking Eagle Rare 10 yr old, which although I've not actually tried it yet (bottle in stash) is apparently, pretty good.

Should be worth a go.

Personally not a fan of Woodford, but I would recommend Makers Mark or Wild Turkey 101. Both rather nice!

Also if he likes Jack Daniels, how about a bottle of Gentleman Jack or Single Barrel?

I tried this recently. Amazingly smooth, very nice although I found had a grassy flavour which I wasn't massively keen on.

If he likes Jack Daniels he may not appreciate a decent bourbon, because JD isn't even a bourbon, and it's crap, imho.

But there's nothing wrong with liking it, as I prefer various cheap and nasty foods over their decent alternatives.

Buffalo trace is a great bourbon, you can easily find it in tesco and asda for around £20 a bottle. Buffalo trace also make some of the best bourbon around like Stagg, eagle rare, Weller etc.
