By chance I noticed today that if I stop and take my foot off the brake the brake lights still stay on until I press the go button again. I have an auto but it doesn't creep hence not having to hold my foot on the brake (even on a hill).

What does the Highway Code have to say about that!

If that is how your system works then you can't do anything about it, and I don't pretend to know the ins and outs of your vehicle braking system.

Then there are those who don't have this system but just choose to sit with foot on brake anyway. Some are adamant they do it to ps off drivers behind them, just wonderful.

Only if they want massive accidents!

I am another that does't see the problem with brake lights, I've never felt dazzled or blinded by them. I'm guessing some people are just more sensitive to the red light than others. Curiously I think I'm less dazzled than other people in general, I certainly seem able to see better than all the idiots in front of me that brake every time another car comes toward them. The joy of country roads at night I guess.
Thisyes

If you have ever been rear ended badly while stationary then you'll appreciate the benefits versus the negatives of making your car more visible and attention catching of possibly distracted motorists when stopped at traffic lights or stop street particularly in the day time when normal rear running lights aren't visible.

Good practice is for the last car in a stopped line of cars to keep it's brake lights on until the next car has come to stop behind it. That being said no need to keep them on afterwards.

No, the reason most people don't realise it may be a problem is because to most people it's not a problem...
On that basis I guess we should all start parking in the disabled spaces...

I'm sure this has been covered in 10 pages, but the BMW Auto is designed to switch the engine off when you sit on the brakes. You can knock it into park but this extends the getaway time a bit so generally, just easier and more economical to sit on the brakes!

Perhaps if the LEDS weren't so bright it would be less of an issue. I doubt anybody would really be bothered about an old astra or corsa owner sitting on the brakes. They haven't the power to annoy anybody but the new stuff seems to be about 'I've got more wattage then you, I'm amazing'. FFS how bright do you have to be to tell the world that you're stationary? Perhaps my handbrakes far to modest.

This thread typifies the current state of PH for me. Old bds moaning about the brightness of brake lights, because it "irritates" them. Seriously?

I think this is the bigger issue and isn't the driver's fault. The trend is to brighter lights that still pass regulations. The trend is towards automatic electronic handbrakes aligned to stop/start (on both manual and automatic cars). The trend is for cars held on the electronic handbrake to illuminate the brake lights for safety so as not to be rear ended in a queue. You will see a lot more cars with brake lights on in queues going forward.

If anything needs to change it is probably not going to be in the gift of the driver but in the technology. We already have adaptive brakes lights being developed that can flash in emergency braking maybe we need adaptive brake lights that sense when stationary that the vehicle has stopped behind them and either dim the brake lights or turn them off?

Out of curiosity, how many accidents have there been rear ending because they did not see the cars stopped vs brake lights on and not seeing them? I suppose there have been a few, standard of driving being what it is.

Then perhaps Mave needs to grow a pair and stop whingeing.
Theres far to much moaning going on here right now and as for repeat threads.....Daytime lights/Fog lights, petrol v diesel, brake lights, electric handbrake etc, I am sure I am not the only one that thinks, noooooooooooo not again. If my brake lights dazzle you, look away/dont get too close..IF you rear end me, I sue your effin ass for every penny I own.
Theres far too much namby pampy oh whoa is me PC BS attitude here at times. Stay in bed if you cant handle the real actual world where the majority of others dont give a flying fk what you think.

I'll get me coat................incoming from Angry of Mayfair wannabees coming to a thread here soon.

That's very charitable of you, but under these circumstances I think you should leave your money out of this.

I sit with my foot on the brakes until another car stops behind me and then the handbrake goes on - always thought it best to be clear that I am stationary especially in bad weather conditions.

On a side note, I have never really understood people vastly exaggerating the brightness of brake and fog lights - even at night they really aren't that bad.

An annoyance, yes, but they aren't that bright. And that is coming from someone who finds sunlight very bright on occasion and always has sunglasses in the car for precisely this reason!

That's fine - leave. Or stop whinging.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Don't like PH? Don't come back. Result is you're happier and it removes some of the whinging on here - two birds, one stone. It's not a complex concept.

WTF, how does the car behind know your in "P" or "N" with the handbrake on, and how does he know it freaks them out.

All these mega bright brake lights these days really piss me off in slow moving traffic, especially when it's dark. More than a few seconds I leave mine in "D" and apply the handbrake. If I am waiting on lights, Imtend to stick it in "P".

As one post said, being in "P" and getting rear ended buggers your box up, happens all the time does that.

I think it's because going from P to D goes through R, illuminating the reversing lights for a moment.
It doesn't on my car. It waits a second before before putting the reversing lights on just in case you're passing from Park to Drive or vice versa.
