My 14 year daughter wants a DSLR for Christmas and as part of her GCSE Art course she needs one for a project.

I was thinking of the Nikon D3200 as a good introduction to DSLR photography and she could borrow some of my kit and lenses but then I noticed that the D3100 was still around at a lower price. OK its 12mp not 24mp but hey my own D70 is only 5mp and that was the bees knees back in the day as well as the best part of a grand.

Damn, the cheapest was Argos at £239 but I checked at lunchtime and they are all out of stock. Had a look at the 3200 on their site but that was £349 yet hang on! next to it is the same camera with the same lens for £199.

Only one place round here had one in stock and you couldn't reserve for delivery so I raced round and picked it up.

One brand new D3200 for nearly half price.

I suspect that as Argos are not really a photography shop they had one of these latest Nikon's at each of their stores. You race round, it's gone so while you are there you give in and buy the full price one rather than go to Jessops.

PS Doh! I see that there is a 3300 out now. Never mind the one I bought is still bloody cheap for a DSLR.

ETA OK half recommended retail price. I see other shops are selling these quite cheap as well. Jessops has the same kit for £279 and then you can claim £20 cashback from Nikon.

Still £70 off without faffing about with the cashback smile

That's a really good price. Nearest one to me is 20 miles away and I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't there when I got there.

So tempting at that price. I guess its the non VR lens in the kit.

Yep! non VR but I have some she can use or maybe she'll have to learn to keep it steady first biggrin

The funny thing is that I tried to reserve it but it wouldn't give me a reference number so I drove straight to the branch and tried to order on their screens and it said it was out of stock and that all the other nearby stores had non either.

I spoke to the lady at the desk and she checked and said that one was reserved with a memory card. I said that was me and she said oh and a case. When I said that I didn't order a case she replied that it wasn't my reserved item, it must be someone else's.

I remembered that I looked at a case but didn't think I'd reserved it (true). She let me have it and said that will be £299.00 for the camera. That's how it came up on her screen. I asked her to look at the web version and she saw it at £199 and that's what I got it for.

Phew biggrin

It is amazing how tech plummets in price whilst essentials keep going up.

I've just bought an xbox 360 500gig with Fifa '15 for my son for £199. Only a couple of months ago I paid the same, after much hunting for the best deal, for a 250gig xbox with a couple of rubbish games.

The 250gig is now £150.

They'll be even cheaper after Christmas.

That's body only, but I did see them at Jessops for around £280 then you can get £20 back from Nikon.
