Just a random thought I had...

I could probably think of loads, but for now I nominate the MK3 Golf.

Hated and slated even by many VW fans. But my dad had one, just an ordinary 1.6GL, and it was an absolute trooper of a car. One of those motors that just went on and on and on without ever going wrong despite being used and abused, never serviced or looked after or even washed most of the time.
Had over 220k on the clock when he passed it on, (for free I might add) but it was still MOTd and fully functional, and happily driven away by its new owner.
This was a few years ago mind, no idea if it's still around. I suppose I could check out the reg number if I could be arsed....

...But yeah, I digress. I believe the MK3 Golf deserves a hell of a lot more respect than most people give it, or at least this one does.

So what you guys got?

Nissan Figaro.... Although ideally I would put something less asthmatic in the bay.

I think the MGF/TF is a better drivers' car than the MX5 which is probably a hanging offence on here. smile

Porsche 996, I know they aren't universally hated but I seem to be alone in declaring them the only 911 I really want

I actually have a soft spot for the Figero too.
Maybe I imagined it, but I'm sure there was a Japan-only Micra years ago with both a supercharger and a turbocharger attached to a one litre engine!? That would be fun in a Figero, Micra running gear and all...

Can't really comment on the MGF or MX5 as I've driven neither, but I like the look of them both. Always loved weeny sports cars.

And I do like a good Scimitar I do. Seem to be plenty still around by classic standards too which is nice....

BMW X6, there seems loads of hate for these and I have always liked them, another one that springs to mind is the Ford Cougar I considered buying one years ago but everyone I mentioned it to laughed their heads off at me!

Porsche 996. They are miles better than a contemporary Corvette, M3, etc.
Fiat Multipla. Functional design over committee styled mundanity.
Toyota MR2 turbo. Yes its heavy. Yes its a GT more than a sports car. Yes you will spin it. They're still excellent.

They were pretty good handling - they should have gone with the ST200 version

Another vote for the 996 here.

I also like the BMW Z3 (in 2.8,3.0 or M form). I think it's better looking than the Z4.

Yes I think they would have had a winner on their hands with that version, I even test drove one and liked it but just couldn't quite pull the trigger so ended up in a ST24 instead but looking back I should have stuck to my guns and gone with the Cougar.

Citroen ZX, I have had 3 now, was very upset when my last one died at MOT time due to chronic rust.
Currently looking for another one to smoke about in next year, probably a TD but i will probably just buy the closest to my house.

I have always really wanted a 2.0 16v Volcane, there is something wrong with me i know. paperbag

I believe there was a Micra super turbo .... And I am sure there was a supercharged 1.2 cherry aswell.
Sadly only for the jap market, however I'm sure a few made there way to the uk.

I owned one straight out of Uni. 6 years old and with less than 100K on it and it had depreciated from an RRP of about £30k to the grand total of £1000. It was endearingly dated and crap in many ways, and as brittle as an overcooked flapjack, but it was fun when it worked and I always thought it looked gorgeous in JRG, cream leather with burgundy carpets and piping. So tacky you had to love it getmecoat

Count me in on the 996.

I'll also nominate the Rover 75. A fluffy pillow of waft.
