So im sat here with the ham joint boiling away, about another half an hour to go and was wondering once its done can i cut off the rind and bung that into the oven on its own to make crackling?

If so, any tips?

I would cut it off, drop it in cold water and pat dry, might be worth salting it too. I think I'd fry it (outside down) on a high heat and then put it in the oven for a while.
I'm sure, on this forum, others will have done it in the situation you describe. I haven't so this is only a suggestion based on what I would do.

I do my gammon joints in the slow cooker and always make crackling by cutting it off once I take the meat out to rest, crack salt and black pepper on it and chuck it in the oven, makes perfect crackling every time
