Hi, Really enjoying reading everyones Chimaera experiences. Just started body off prep on my 98 4.0 Model. Its a complete basket case at the moment with little or no outriggers without rust. Thought you might be interested in the o/s/f lower track control arm! Camber is a little adrift and way past sand blast and re powder coat i think! Looking forward to picking the forum's thoughts as i progress through the restoration.

Yep, does look like its been in a lake doesn't it. I knew it was rough and decided that as i was likely to have a the body off one eventually i might as well have a cheap one as a blank canvas.I've read a lot about the later ones being the worst and this certainly confirms that view.Thankfully whilst completely neglected the car is pretty much unmolested so probably worth the effort.

Fortunately there is very little that cant be replaced, and if it cant, then there is something better to replace it with.
Are you going for standard restoration or something little different?
Which ever you decide keep updating on progress as I am sure there a few on here that will be interested in your new project.
Wishing you good luck smile

Mines a 99.

Before a bit of tittilating.

After.

Mind you, that's with only 39K on the clock.

Edited 'cause the iPad didn't recognise tittilating and put in "total acting" smile

No need. Just spray a bit of Waxoyl on there. Sorted!

OP: What is your plan of action? I presume a whole new chassis; I'm not sure there'd be anything left if you shot-blasted that one!

That is truly shocking - seen a few bad images of Chims on here, but none like that!
Will look forward to following the progress of this on here.

That's nothing to do with it being a later car (powder coat quality etc) that's just neglect and salt water corrosion rolleyes which is good for the OP'er if he got it cheap enough scratchchin if this has been on the road recently with a current MOT then irked that's been like that for ages confused that's a new chassis for sure needed yes hope the mechanical's and the general condition are OK otherwise the costs are going through the roof DIY or otherwise frown

Totally agree, mine is a 98 S and the chassis has been thoroughly coated in black schultz, which seems to have completely done it's job and wherever you scrape a bit off it is pure white underneath.
As said above it is all down to how each individual car has been treated / stored and generally looked after.

Interesting mix of glass half empty and glass half full answers! Remains to be seen if the chassis is salvageable, I'll get the body off and take a more informed view.Luckily it looks like the sump has been leaking for quite a while, which has provided some additional chassis protection!
By the way, I'd like to meet the bloke who designed the lack of space around the exhaust manifold boltsfrown

Body and some dismantling photos later.

If the body's coming off, leave the manifolds on.

Ditto if the engine is coming out.

Good luck, its all satisfying and pretty straight forward stuff. I've just put the body back on mine after outrigger/full chassis and running gear restoration. There is a wealth of information amongst the posters on here and my experience is that people are only more than happy to help.

Keep the photos coming.

Paul.

I don't think that you can get the body off if you leave the exhaust manifolds on. I left them on, took the engine out and then removed the body. When I put it all back, put the engine in the chasis, dropped body on and then put the exhaust manifolds back on.
