My A4 is due in for a service tomorrow, and dealer has just told me it's due a cambelt change. (at 60K miles/ 5 years)

However, my service handbook for the vehicle says belt change interval is 114K miles - and a local indy tells me it has a chain, not a belt anyway.

I'm confused now...

Got some sense from the dealer service dept: Yes, it has a chain, and no, it doesn't need changing.

The Cambelt interval the dealer quoted you is correct.

EA113 engine - cambelt.

EA888 engine - chain.

Thanks to the incestuous nature of VAG products, some research into what engine you have is required.

If the dealer told you it's a cambelt, based on your registration, you can't argue with that.

Apparently, a simple check you can do yourself is look at the dipstick, if it has one. On the cambelt engine, it's on the front of the engine block. On the chain engine has, it's on the left side of the engine block.

Wish you hadn't told me that. The dipstick 'hole' (no actual dipstick ,of course) is on the front of the block. Which, you say, means belt.

Engine code is CDNC, if that helps.

The engine is longtitudinal in the A4, so I think that's where the confusion comes from. So my dipstick is right in front of the chain cover.

This doc was a big help. Confirms that B8 A4's do indeed have an EA888 which has a chain.
