Datsun 240Z(s): Time For Tea?

Petrolicious works its magic in the UK with a superb father-son 240Z pairing

Even when the it isn't actually that good, you always want your dad's car at some point. It's a cool car simply because it's your dad's car. But what happens when your dad's car is actually something covetable? Something like a Datsun 240Z perhaps?

You buy one. Ollie Streek's father Mel owned the red 'Ratsun' you see here and, having spent some time driving it, decided he wanted his own. So he bought a restored Zee from Copenhagen and now the two enjoy their Datsuns together in Kent. Father and son 240Zs?Excellent idea!

The Petrolicious style of production works just as well in the UK as in the States, even if Kent can't quite match California for glamour. Hopefully you will raise a smile too at the middle-aged father driving the unpainted car and the young man in the fastidiously restored example. And don't assume it's just a case of dad funding son's car purchase either...

See the vid here.

I'm pretty sure its not a proper Petrolicious production, it doesn't have the same feel or camera work.

Great video (it's definitely Petrolicious too) and two very special cars.

What a great bond they have over the cars.

The old boys got some other cool cars in the garage too.

Nice to see a father and son enjoying a couple of class cars together like that.

The noise from that engine just reminded me of buying a 260z in the eighties - it was a rusty heap of junk and the steering was like something out of an old truck! It was advertised for £1200 at the time and we ended up giving him a £800 plus a knackered 1275 GT mini for it. Loved the dash and bucket seats etc but was no fun to drive.

I think Dan Trent had said in a previous Petrolicious story that the normal camera man was hanging up his boots and heading to pastures new.

Lovely cars.

Didn't seem to be up to the normal quality. Shame, because being filmed in Britain is unusual for Petrolicious, but I just didn't warm to it like with most others. Dunno why, maybe the owners seemed more wealthy than passionate....

I don't mean the operator, just the general production values/shots/direction. Its a shame.

Enjoyed the video, good to see they are keeping the family tradition goimg.

Always wanted a 240z myself as I couldn't afford an austin healey, and these were seen as similar in character as the big healey.
I didn't end up owning either. Ah well.

There was a lovely 240Z advertised in the Classifieds this month. Unfortunately before I could get to view it it had sold. Now it's time to find another one that offers similar value.

Yes, I enjoy most of the Petrolicious series.
The 260Zs went cheap in the 80s - we always saw them as a cheap sub for the 2.8 Capris which were too new for us to afford - the 'rat' look one has an appeal even now

Wonderful car. but I can't help but think that an awful lot of fettling and expensive alterations have to be done to a 40 odd year old car, before it becomes anything like the ones we drool over in videos ?!
