Not been over to Vn for a few years now, but decided as we have a public holiday next Friday would get away for dirty weekend break with SWMBO, Anyone got any good hotel recommendations? Probably looking for District 1 / riverside, near the markets and restaurants.

Hi John if you want a good clean hotel (3 star) inc buffet breakfast use the Thien Xuan (pronounced Tin Sung) at 110 Le Thanh Ton street D1. You will be just behind Ben Thanh market, walking distance to back packer area although not really good for you as you only like Asians. Not far from the bars and restaurants, its all there.

There are loads of good restaurants all over the place, just too many to mention, it really depends on whjat you like.

5 star hotel i recommend the caravelle for Sunday brunch, superb food and free flow Champagne for around $50-60, me and mate got through 4 bottle of Moet two years ago, was great. There is also a bar called "Saigon' Saigon" in Caravelle on 9th floor, great for sun downers looking out over the city, a little pricey but great atmosphere.

Street food in the evening at Ben Thanh market, stalls will be erected every evening with many restaurants too, get the bbq`d fish its awesome.

Good bars are, Bar 5, The Emergency Room (theyre dressed as nurses), Phatties......all have the pretty things serving you beer, you can take the Mrs in they understand and will leave you alone but then again maybe you dont want to be left alone LOL.

Does "Underground" bar still exist in HCMC?

Had some good fun in there 10 / 15 years ago...

I used to frequent it too around the same time as you, unfortunately the shopping mall above the underground was re-developed and it got closed.

we might have been in there at the same time, mid 2002...

the missus has floated the idea of going around the region on honeymoon, but i am slightly scared to see how much i am sure Vietnam has changed. Great place.

Yup i first went out there in June 02 and stayed till 06, then back in 07 till 2011. Saigon has changed massively since those early days. Its growing up...

I find that terribly sad, in a way. I noticed that Bentley opened a dealership in Hanoi this year.

Its similar to a young child growing up with parents who don't have a fking clue, have no direction and couldn't give a st about how it grows up and develops. It seems that the government sends it cronies off to see what other countries are doing in their cities then go back to Vietnam, borrow loads of money from Korea and/or Japan, attempt to do/build what they have seen over-seas and do it poorly and when they were over in the foreign country didn't even bother about infrastructure to aid what they want to build. So they come back build what ever it was they liked and it fails at the first hurdle, then they spend a fortune playing "catch-up".

They bought a shed load of "smart" buses from Japan last year for $$$millions, for Hanoi, introduced them through this year and only bought a few thousand "smart cards", not enough cards for the demand, so they asked Japan for more cards, apparently there is a 6 month lead time on the production of the cards (that's the official reason, although there`s probably more to it than that) so they have all these brand new buses running around with only a hand full of passengers on board. They wont let the driver collect cash as they cannot be trusted ( now there`s a thing) or he will get robbed.

That's very basically how it works out there.

Having said all of that I still love the place to bits, it has the good, the bad and the ugly all in one package. In fact going over next week.
