Bad Advertising...

I don't work in advertising and I am probably not the target audience for most that I see but does bad advertising throughly annoy other people as much as me?

This morning for example, arrived an email from Nat***t Business Department with a nice picture of a cricketer hitting a ball hard. With the Question below it "Tell us if we are hitting a home run!"

Now, not only is that mighty distasteful given the sad news today but also we are not American. Who thinks this stuff up, gets it signed off by a superior who thinks its a good idea, then release's in to the public domain hoping it will win them praise and or business?

Maybe I'm just old and grumpy now but what a complete waste of time and effort. Dont even get me started on Calgon Tablets......I mean just say they don't wreck my washing, thats all I want to know, the washing machine costs less than whats in it most of the time...grrr.

Despite being in marketing all my life I frequently wonder who the fk signs off some of the utter st I see every day. I honestly remember the good advertising more than the bad because its so rare. The 'home run'/cricketer is a classic though!

Advertising really doesn't wind me up any more. Not since the advent of the PVR means I never have to watch a TV advert ever again!

I do, however, have an almost overwhelming desire to go on a Viking River Cruise at least two decades ahead of schedule!! hehe

I don't get as annoyed with advertising as I do with utterly crap signwriting and sign making. It's not hard to spell, for example, Almond Grove correctly, yet we have a local streetsign that says "Amond".
See also crap spelling on vans.

I wonder if it was a template marketing communication from an American (or global) marketing company, the image was then changed but the slogan wasn't updated.

Either way, in a company like NatWest it was probably signed off by at least 3 different people who didn't spot it, never mind the person/people who put it together in the first place.

That one works particularly well in radio adverts, when they have to read out the small print, including words to the effect of "you don't actually pay no VAT, because that would be illegal. You do pay VAT, but we give you a discount so it feels like you're not paying VAT".

Yes but it's discrimination to insist on a non dyslexic sign writer!

Well either that or they are written on an iPhone.

It will also have gone through a Stasi-like compliance department who check it forensically for implied promises like "bank with Natwest and you can have all the money you like" and count the black people to make sure it hits quota.

No matter which week, that is a stinker of an ad.

(Someone should have stopped that email this week. That's a poor slip-up.)

Just remembered that Natwest are the same people running the advertising campaign on TV encouraging you to "bin" your current bank in favour of them, but features their supposed new client dumping all his mail for the other banks in a bin in a public location, so ideal for anyone to steal his identity and pretty much fk his banking record up then laugh

No but it can be cancelled at a moment's notice. I'm not saying it should have been, in this case, but it's not exactly difficult to amend an email marketing campaign
