I thought the days of the fuel pumps adding that extra penny after self serving fuel had long gone.
My last two fuel ups were to an exact amount of £20, I ensured to take my finger off the nozzle trigger, as soon as I get to the cashier...... the mysterous 0.01p is charged. Is this down to faulty (or too accurate a) fuel measuring or what? The Fuel Station was not interested in my comment about it.

Its not the penny but the principle - Can I complain and who to?

Unfortunately, I believe they have this included in the margin of error. Getting quite common place now, and certainly not good form.

There is a rational explanation - On the basis of purchasing a single litre (if they actually let you) at 123.9p/l the sale is always rounded up to the nearest 1p so it should in theory show the sale as £1.24. The number of litres in the sale is rounded down to the nearest hundreth (10ml) but is more accurate so it could actually be at 1.009 which would easily account for the extra 1p (it would only take .2p to tip it over from £1.24 to £1.25. .2p is equivalent to 1.6ml - way below the 10ml accuracy of the pump reading. Notice that the last digit of the litres is blanked - the pumps are accurate enough to measure the 1.6ml so it shouldn't be a big surprise. Now, if the sale read more than 1.25 the conspiracy theory would stand.

As a small point you could put 10litres in instead and improve the visible accuracy of your reading - and I'm pretty sure you'll find that it shows 12.4(something) and not 12.5(something) as the sale...

In essence the whole issue is a rounding error, the price is rounded up the fuel delivery is rounded down.

My local petrol station has a dish of 1p that people can take one if they only have notes and no shrapnel.

If it does that and I have the cash I'll give them £20 and offer to put the 1p on my amex, normally they then just drop it...well 19 times of 20...

Atleast the card handling fees are likely to be more than the 1p
